metronidazole antibiotics in pregnancy

I am 24 weeks and have been prescribed metronidazole for BV. I'm sure the doctor would not prescribe anything unsafe for pregnancy but Google (I know I shouldn't) is providing conflicting advice. Has anyone else taken this antibiotic during pregnancy?

I had to take them at low dose throughout my whole pregnancy, DS is now a healthy toddler.

If you are concerned though, you can speak to specialist pharmacists who will be able to talk to you about pregnancy and antibiotics. With infections you have to remember that there is a risk to the baby if you don't treat.

Thanks tall , I had to pick up the prescription at the hospital after hours last night so didn't have the opportunity to discuss with anyone - I will speak to a pharmacist today

I took it, and I took it after the birth too whole bfing. You could call 111 and speak to a nurse about it if you want reassurance. x

I had to take them prophylactically at stupidly high doses every six weeks from 13 weeks due to the surgery I had at 13 weeks.

Made me feel like utter crap (although I had to take them with erythromycin too, so it could have been those)

DS was born with a discoloured and pitted canine tooth as we discovered when it came through. I found conflicting reports on whether that was likely to be down to the antibiotics as some DO cause effects like that. Metronidazole wasn't commonly seen as one of them, but like all things related to pregnancy it is difficult to do proper ethical research and most people wouldn't report something like a pitted baby tooth to anyone anyway so if it did cause issues, researchers may not necessarily know.

Aside from that he seems healthy and fairly typical for a 2.5 year old though!

My consultant does hundreds of the operations he did on me and the prescription was routine. I'm sure if there was a more serious issue it would have been flagged up by now.
