Help with sleeping?

I'm 2 months pregnant and having trouble sleeping.
I'm so so tired and crash out really early and then wake about 1, 2, 3, 4am and can not get back to sleep.
I've been off work sick all week due to constant feelings of feeling sick and problems sleeping.
I am tired, irritable, anxious, shaky during the day as I've been awake since the small hours.
I have 2 children already and life has to go on so can't nap during the day.
Is there anything safe to take in pregnancy to aid a restful nights sleep?

I don't have any suggestions but just want to sympathise, im 9 wks and wake up frequently and can't get back to sleep.

I've started taking relaxing baths before bed an cutting out any day time dozes.
I can't remember this insomnia so early in my last pregnancy, it's horrible isn't it?

ohcluttergotme · 09/11/2013 18:00

Thanks Whereisthewitch. It is so horrible. I feel wrecked all the time and just wish I could take a sleeping tablet to knock me out.
I definitely don't remember these feelings this early on with my last 2 pregnancies.
I think I'm going to download some meditation music for I-pod, hot bath, warm milk and just keep trying to relax.
Good luck to you too Smile

I know it's a pain in the arse when you're feeling knackered and icky but: it's well worth trying to make sure you get some fresh air and exercise every day. Even if you just manage a few minutes walking around the block, it'll help tire your body and let you get to sleep more easily.

As I say, I know (from personal, current experience) this is often the very last thing you feel like doing when pregnant!

Thanks puntastic.
Hope things improve for you too Smile

If it makes you feel any better, I had the same problem early on but since I hit trimester 2 I've been sleeping through the night with no problem. So hang in there, it will get better!

ohcluttergotme · 10/11/2013 20:38

Thank you Caria, only another 4 weeks to go! Sleeping through the night sounds a dream.
I've been off work for a week and back to tomorrow but wish I could stay off til 2nd trimester Smile

I am feeling just the same and am 9 weeks :)

Having done a little research on Nytol, sominex the active ingrediance is Diphenhydramine info here

As you can see it can lead to a cleft palate if taken in early pregnancy or retinopathy of prematurity (blindness) in later pregnancy

so I think warm milk and baring with it will have to do :(

ohcluttergotme · 11/11/2013 06:47

Thanks Seat, it's awful isn't it. I think if I didn't have other children I could just about cope but it's dealing with them that tips you over!
I'm sorting here in tears trying to wt ready for work.
Definitely think will need to stick with warm milk, not worth the risks with any other products. My midwife suggested banana as well as it releases serotonin.
I had warm milk, banana and paracetamol last night and do think it helped. Also helped my ds and dd had a sleepover at dsil and are not here just now.
Hope you manage to get some rest too.

I would really advise against taking Benadryl as its main ingredient is diphenhydramine which can might increase your risk of the baby having a cleft palate (which develops early in pregnancy) and then a type of blindness later on!

it is rated as a type B drug in the US which means not tested fully

I dont want to scare anyone but also dont want anyone to think that the affects can be minor

seatfor5 · 11/11/2013 21:42

ohclutter I do feel your pain this bud is my 4th I have 9,5 & 3 year old DS's and have so been struggling with sleep but it should get better in a few weeks :)

Warm bath, warm milk & bananas are the way to go!

Inglori0us · 11/11/2013 22:02

I'm still sleeping terribly at 18 weeks. Waking up with my mind racing, painful hips, carpal tunnel pain.
It's bleak.

Jorior · 11/11/2013 22:36

I've used Night Time Rescue Remedy with all 3 pregnancies and found it helpful.

ohcluttergotme · 12/11/2013 18:00

Inglorious, sounds like your having a really rough time, hope your situation improves soon. Do you have other children, are you still working?
Jorior, think I may need to investigate this rescue night time remedy, is it like rescue remedy that you spray in your mouth?
Seatfor5, sounds like you have lots to cope with too which is probably a lot to do with not sleeping as so much to always think about Hmm
Hope sleep improves for everyone soon.
