NCT antenatal courses

I'm thinking of signing up for an NCT antenatal course. When (i.e. at what stage in your pregnancy) is the best time to attend? At some point in the second or third trimester?
And how much in advance do I need to book?

I just signed up to an essentials course and am 16 weeks pregnant. I'm due late April and the course runs late Feb to late March. If you go to their website and stick in your postcode and due date they will recommend courses nearby that they think would fit!

I'm in the middle of my nct classes now, started when I was 32 weeks. We booked just after my 20 week scan and there are 5 other couples on our course. I'm not sure what the maximum number is.

Yes I'll echo pp...you put in your due date and a course will pop up for the month your due in. That way they ensure that everyone in the group is due within a few weeka of eachotherSmile

Great, thank you!

just to say you do need to book quite far in advance, in our area most places are gone by 16 weeks. Luckily someone on MN let me know or i would have held out and missed a place xxx

Depends on where you live. Last time I found you had to book really early as everything got really booked up.

Like everyone else says, the NCT will tell you when the most appropriate classes for your due date are.

I'd also recommend your hospital classes if you are able to attend them.

Our NCT classes were very good for the 'holistic' approach, and very educational on natural birthing, breast feeding, and thinking how to involve your partner, how the arrival of a child will impact your life and relationship and such. They also covered interventions and pain relief, but not in that much detail really (I'm told some NCT teachers are so pro natural birthing, they don't cover these topics at all).

We found our hospital classes really informative on their own policies- ie at what stage you should call if you go into labour, when they'll let you use the birthing pool, when they are likely to recommend inductions if you're overdue, what happens if you need a c-section etc.

NCT was also great for meeting people of course! I made some great friends.

Can I jump in please and ask roughly how much they cost? I was just looking some up in my area and they look quite good.

Dusty04 · 09/11/2013 19:31

I think it varies in each area, and discounts are available but we paid full price and ours was £145..
