has anyone had a nuchal scan/cvs done at Fetal Medicine centre, London?

does anyone know, is it possible to have a nuchal scan and, if necessary, a cvs done in the same day? We want to travel to London to have the scan as they use a much more comprehensive procedure than they do here in bournemouth. If the results are poor I will most likely choose a cvs. Obviously I would like to get it done on the same day to avoid making the journey twice. Does anyone know if this is possible or will I be given an appointment at a later date to return?

I had cvs and a nuchal scan there nearly 3 years ago. I think (from memory) that you can only have cvs done on certain days as Dr Kyrpos Nicholaides did/does them all himself.
I was booked in for both and what happehned was that after I had nuchal scan and bloods done I was given the results from that and had the option, if I wished, to go ahead for the CVS.
Hope this helps but if you have any more questions just ask of alternatively phone them up. I've always found them to be very helpful.

I had mu nuchal scan there (about a year ago), and IF I rememeber correctly they would have done a CVS in the same day...
But I would say the best is to give them a call...

crumpet · 08/07/2006 20:22

We did both, but had to do it on separate days. I think that ths CVS is only done on a Wednesday (and no idea if they do nuchal fold scans on that day), but it would be worth ringing the clinic to check, as I may be wrong.

The other thing to note is that for the CVS especially they over run timewise big time, so try and get an appointment for as early as possible in the day. Our CVS appointment was for 2, but they suggested we ring in advance to check the timings. We live an hour from Paddington, and when we rang they told us to arrive at 4. We were eventually seen at 9 pm, and when we came out there were at least 5-6 other couples still waiting. We had a phone with us and once we had registered with reception went out to the Marylebone road, and ate and did our Christmas shopping - would have been a lovely afternoon/evening if it hadn't been for the worry of the CVS...

Good luck

What you're saying about running over timewise certainly rings bells. I remember they warned me that this was happening and I was panicing like mad about missing the last train (I lived in Edinburgh . Fortunately I was able to book an appointment at lunchtime so the over-run wasn't too bad at that time but I can imagine (and was told) that late afternoon ones can run well into the evening but they also said that they will make sure that everyone is done at some point (even if it's hours late).
And yes, from memory, it was a Wednesday that I had mine.

I had a nuchal scan done there about a month ago and just wanted to say I thought they were wonderful there. The sonographer explained it all in such detail and was so lovely.
I would give them a call as they were really helpful when I was asking loads of questions over the phone before I went.

bunny3 · 10/07/2006 11:46

thank you so much, I'll give them a call now. It's really useful to know about them over-running - I live in Bournemouth so will need to amke some overnight childcare arrangements in case we are really late.

hi - just wanted to say good luck and that i found them all to be great there. had a 12 week nuchal and a 20 wk anomaly scan - both lasted ages and were fab.

alex8 · 10/07/2006 14:55

can I ask a question? How far in advance did you need to book your scan?

WideWebWitch · 10/07/2006 14:57

I booked quite a way in advance as they like to do it as close to 12 weeks as pos. They got dd's sex wrong though!

bunny3 · 10/07/2006 16:36

www at that!

Alex, I am 9wks and booked today for a scan in 3 weeks time on 12th August.

Tutter, thank you I am dreading it but know I'll be in the best possible hands. I have booked for a Wednesday so I can have a CVS if I choose to (they only do CVS on Wednesdays and Fridays).

ps; they also told me sex of child, which was great, tho warned against 100 per cent accuracy. they were, however, spot on

UCM · 10/07/2006 17:54

I am going on Friday so any other questions, let me know and I'll ask for yer

alexh · 11/07/2006 10:54

I went there for 12 week nuchal scan and triple blood test. They were excellent and told me 705 likelihood of it being aboy...which it was

blueshoes · 11/07/2006 11:49

Bunny3, you probably already know this, but with a CVS, the sex is absolutely guaranteed to be correct!

stingray · 11/07/2006 13:57

dear mommie, how can they tell the sex of the baby at 12 weeks?I had a nuchal scan 6 weeks ago and nothing was mentioned about the babies sex. Iwas under the impression that you could not tell until 16 weeks.

Coolmama · 11/07/2006 20:10

Because CVS is an invasive test and they take a sample of the foetus cells to test - ergo - no mistakes

NotQuiteCockney · 11/07/2006 20:16

They can guess at the sex at 12 weeks, but it's very much a guess. They told me it was 70% accurate, so not much better than flipping a coin (they were right, though).

I think there's one day that they do last-minute appointments, and that day tends to run very late, as of course lots of people get worrisome nuchal fold results elsewhere, and decide to have a more authoritative nuchal fold result before having anything invasive (and given Prof Nicolides invented the nuchal fold, I think he's pretty good!).

We had one 20-week there, on the last-minute day, and it ran late (they did warn us, though). But we had the nuchal fold and the 20-week scan for DS2 there, not on the last-minute day, and it was absolutely fine, ran on time, or near enough.

UCM · 11/07/2006 21:09

I was booked in for 3.25pm, but luckily changed it for 9am as I have heard of people being there all day. Hopefully I will be first in.

Coolmama · 11/07/2006 21:12

I had a 2pm appt and eventually saw Kypros at 5.30 pm - but, the receptionist did say that would be at least a 2 hr wait so I was free to arrive for the appt and then go off for a lovely wander around Marylebone High Street for a bit.

Imafairy · 12/07/2006 09:31

I had the scan and the CVS done on the same day, it was a Thurday, and wasn't done by the Prof (this was in November). I was only about 20 mins late going in for an afternoon appointment.
They were great - I liked the fact that they explained everything in English and made sure they didn't overcomplicate things, but were also very matter of fact with it, which I think you need.
All the best.
