I am in my second trimester and have recently developed thrush (blush!) - the pharmacist told me that i could use Canesten but have arrived home to see the pack warning to check with my midwife/doctor - do I need to do this or can I just go ahead ... help!

The cream should be fine. I think you are meant to avoid oral tablets though. .. BNF says

"Vulvovaginal candidiasis is common during pregnancy and can be treated with vaginal application of an imidazole (such as clotrimazole), and a topical imidazole cream for vulvitis. Pregnant women need a longer duration of treatment, usually about 7 days, to clear the infection. Oral antifungal treatment should be avoided during pregnancy." so seems to say that it is ok.

MrsVegardYlvisaker · 08/11/2013 12:39

You can use Canesten, even pessaries - though in my experience pharmacists won't give them to you unless you have a GP's prescription as they are scared of inducing labour Hmm.

MrsVegardYlvisaker · 08/11/2013 12:40

Sorry, yes - cream and pessaries but not oral medication.

WooWooCaChoo · 08/11/2013 13:56

Was just about to ask this! With my last pregnancy I had a lot of thrush and got prescribed canesten every time.
Just developed thrush with this pregnancy and went to go buy some canesten and they refused me! I'm going to send DP to get some instead :)

Sorry to highjack the thread but what does thrush look/ feel like?

I think I might have it Blush

WooWooCaChoo · 08/11/2013 14:08

Ooh I'm well experienced in thrush! For me it's itchy as fuck, very sensitive around the labia and vagina. You also get discharge that's white or creamy colour. I also get a bit sore when I wee with it.

PoppyAmex · 08/11/2013 14:21

Thanks, Woo

No itching or sensitivity but might have the white-ish thing - is that a sure sign, do you think?

WooWooCaChoo · 08/11/2013 14:34

How long have you had that for? The itching is normally a pretty big part of it, quite rare to get it without the itching.

Discharge is a normal part of pregnancy so it could just be that.

Cocolikeschocolate · 08/11/2013 15:30

Thanks all - I just spoke with a pharmacist friend who confirmed that it was OK too so full steam ahead (a bit paranoid, first pregnancy!) she also advised:
to wear 100% Cotton knickers, drink lots of water, drink Cranberry juice of your wee stings, avoid scented shower gels or body washes in that area and wear tights and tight pants/jeans until it clears up. Hope this helps anyone else whose feeling the "burn"! x

Not sure about the cranberry juice advice, but definitely avoid over tight clothing. Also yeast products (bread etc).

Julietee · 08/11/2013 15:55

Also, I get it without itching. Just soreness, which can trigger right after I wee for some reason.

fryingpantoface · 08/11/2013 20:29

Shit. I took an oral tablet. I'm 30 weeks. What will happen?

Chuckthefucklebrothers · 08/11/2013 20:42

You'll be fine Fryingpan - there's no ethical way of testing drugs on pregnant women, so drugs companies aren't allowed to say they're safe to use during pregnancy. Doesn't mean that it's proved to be dangerous. Check with your GP/midwife to put your mind at ease.

fryingpantoface · 08/11/2013 21:05

Thank fuck for that! Thanks for the reassurance. I started to panic

ladylashes · 08/11/2013 22:01

A bit late to the conversation!

I used a one-off pessary and nothing changed. A 6-night-in-a-row course of pessaries from the doctor soon zapped it.

As far as I know, creams and pessaries are fine, but the tablets aren't (in pregnancy!).

All the best x

ladylashes · 08/11/2013 22:04

Ooops sorry op, didn't see you took a tablet. Aw, I'm sure it'll be fine. As chuck said, they will err crazily on the of caution as they can't test the drugs. I've taken a few things that aren't supposed to be recommended for use in pregnancy x

getagoldtoof · 09/11/2013 07:18

I think flucanazole has been shown to be harmful to a developing foetus in large amounts, which zome women take in cases of recurrent thrush. If you took a one off 150g tablet, it's not likely to have caused any harm. I did at 3 weeks preg, so did some research when I got bfp. I am not worried, but won't be taking it again durong pregnancy.

fryingpantoface · 09/11/2013 08:17

Thanks all! I'll be staying well clear.

In the past the pessaries have sorted it, but I must have just ordered the wrong ones
