ARGH! Found out I'm pregnant this week (will be 5 weeks tomorrow), and feeling every emotion under the sun: excitement, happiness, fear, paralysis!

I'm very recently married, and was sure it'd take a long time to conceive (as told by doctors, due to ovary problems) but one period after coming off the pill it happens. 8-)

Am booked in for my first antenatal appointment, but want to ask, what are the main things I should be thinking about at this stage, other than leading a healthy and relaxed life. Am taking folic acid every day - anything else I should be aware off?

Probably the main things at this stage are the food rules (e.g. things you can't eat) you should be easily able to find through google. Also current recommendations are that you also take vitamin D

Congratulations!

Hello Lemon Lovely!

CONGRATULATIONS!

I got married in May (this year), came off pill in June, and was up the duff by August. Similarly thought PCOS would mean it would take aaaaages to conceive.. and it didn't!

First things first DON'T PANIC - you will get used to the idea! I remember the week after I tested I was in a weird world overlain with "I'm pregnant/ there is a baby inside me" - it takes a few weeks of that before it becomes normal (and by then you may start feeling rubbish).

Assume if you were TTC you were taking folic acid anyway (so keep taking that) - one thing I would say as far as diet is concerned - PROTEIN - at about 7 weeks I started having blood sugar wobbles - feeling faint -/ wobbly - it was because I wasn't eating enough protein and baby was taking it all!

Don't be too disappointed by first Dr appt - I saw Dr - he took blood pressure said take Folic acid - don't drink alcohol - eat healthily. Then had a very similar 1st appt with MW. MW booking appt came at 10 weeks, then scan at 12... it feels like ages. Especially if like us you decide not to tell anyone til after the scan!

Lovely news - wishing you all the best!

Congratulations!

One important thing to do is to go over to the MN Antenatal clubs forum, and join the chat thread - I think this one for July would be the one for you

It's a good place to share all the ups and downs.

Snobble · 08/11/2013 13:05

Heyy Congratulations :) !! I found out 2 months before my wedding and im 19+4 today.

Deffo think about your antenatal classes now and book on the NCT website if thats who you choose to use. Have a quick word with your Dr and get your first midwife appointment booked.

Just make sure you check all the food do's and don'ts. Like no pate, make sure milk products are pasturised, no soft cheese, dont eat fish high in mercury such as tuna/swordfish etc more then once or twice a week max. Also dont eat sushi & the like aswell.

Also prepare yourself for possible morning sickness, you may or may not want to do what i did, which is have a quick word with your workplace manager to give them the heads up incase you need to have sick leave. I had to have 2 months off with HG unfortunatly :-S !

It might also be worth your while having a nose at a book shop for the mumsnet guide. I bought this about 10 weeks in and its great for the basics and a bit of a giggle. But does touch on alot of the subjects you might not want to talk about as well.

Have an awesome pregnancy! Enjoy it as much as you can ;)

ChicaMomma · 08/11/2013 13:15

Congrats lemon!!

We got married on 13th sept and my pregnancy dates from 14th sept!! just goes to show, if you put your 'mind' to it it can happen quickly!!

Lots of water was a tip given to me by my SIL.. she says you should be drinking 2-3 lts at least every day, more than before. I'm 8 weeks now and feeling really great i have to say- eating well helps i think, dont let the hunger set in as this is when the nausea hits!

best of luck to you and welcome!

TruJay · 08/11/2013 14:05

Congratulations Lemon,

My so called ovary issues meant naturally conceiving was highly unlikely so when hubby popped the question we started trying as it would take forever or never happen, but guess what our lil sprog ended up joining me in my wedding dress when our wedding date arrived, little monkey!!

All I can say is eating healthily, folic acid and just looking after yourself. Also if u already exercise, just keep it up. I've found swimming really helpful esp as bump gets bigger! Felt weightless once in the pool!

PrincessKitKat · 08/11/2013 16:30

Congratulations Lemon.

Totally agree with what everyone else has said - and you might want to prepare your DH too! Mine was not expecting his new wife to become a nutcase who had crazy rage one minute and unstoppable tears the next Smile the poor love was baffled. I bought him a funny pregnancy book for men & he's been golden ever since! Ah!

Julietee · 08/11/2013 16:59

But the book 'Expecting Better' by Emily Oster. Seriously, I wish I had it my first tri, it would have saved me so much needless worry.
Also, I think it's important to accept you can only control so much. Like reducing risks with food choices, vitamins, going to checks etc. The rest is really out of our hands!

LemonLovely · 08/11/2013 17:36

Thanks, everyone - brilliant advice and comments. Dreading the morning sickness making an appearance…spend 3 hours a day commuting so it could get ugly!!

Julietee: thanks for the book recommend; I will definitely check that out.

Congratulations Lemon :)

I am approx 6 weeks into my first pregnancy and it still seems so unreal. Saw gp today and came away with a list of things to do... I have a medical condition which means there are other things that need to happen.

princesskitkat which book did you buy for dh? That'll be a good idea for dp for Xmas!

PrincessKitKat · 08/11/2013 23:05

It's very descriptive title is.... 'Pregnancy for Men' by Mark Woods.

I actually found it way less scary & user friendly than the women's books!

fluffandsnuff · 09/11/2013 10:37

Did a test, BFP. Did another one (clearblue) BFN (cried my eyes out). Next day, did another clearblue, BFP 1-2 weeks! Very excited.

Had UTI so was advised not to keep trying on antibiotics- now terrified that something's going to go wrong because we didn't listen. Had cramps (think that's normal) but am already feeling very sick (possibly stress)?

Due date calendar- 17th July.

AuntieMaggie · 09/11/2013 11:26

Thank you PrincessKitKat I was going to give it to him for xmas but he may need it sooner...

FX for you Fluff

I am currently sat here stressing about childcare costs!

Littleangel21 · 09/11/2013 16:35

Hi all,

I'm new to this. Found out that I am 4 weeks and 3 days pregnant. Not expected at all. Only got married in May and due to nature of my work, it's really not ideal. But I am unbelievably happy and excited, although I'm scared to get too excited. The due date is 17 July 2014 and I know it's very early days but just found your chat reassuring. I've been feeling fairly normal although boob tenderness has been on and off- is this normal?

Thanks so, very much

PrincessKitKat · 09/11/2013 16:45

Congratulations fluff & littleangel!

You might find it helpful/reassuring to join the antenatal board for your due month where everyone will be swapping stories of similar worries & sevond time mums can give you sage advice!

For what it's worth my boob pains came & went & everything is fine so far; and lots of posters can tell you horror stories of things they got up to before discovering they were pregnant fluff - drinking, smoking etc and went on to have healthy happy babies.
Everything crossed for easy pregnancies for both of you Thanks

Littleangel21 · 09/11/2013 17:30

Thanks very much princesskitkat!

LemonLovely · 10/11/2013 07:40

Littleangel21: totally empathise - got married in Aug, and due 12th July so we're very close!

PrincessKitKat: thanks for mention of that group - will definitely join.

Been struggling to sleep last few nights - no sickness but am wide awake, even though I'm tired. Read some women get affected by insomnia and am really crossing my fingers I'm not one - have an insane job, and don't know how ill function with no sleep, especially if morning sickness hits!!

Any tips for helping to solve the sleeplessness?

LemonLovely · 10/11/2013 07:48

PS Can anyone tell me what all the acronyms everyone uses are (eg DS, DH)?!

OP posts:
AuntieMaggie · 10/11/2013 08:56

I think theres a glossary somewhere but can't find it on my phone...

DH is darling husband, DS is Darling son, etc

Littleangel21 · 10/11/2013 09:11

Lemon lovely- thanks for that. It's good to know someone going through the same. I also have a pretty crazy job in terms of what they expect of me. I haven't been sleeping well either so have been trying to have a hot bath immediately before bed which has got me to sleep quicker but hadn't resolved the waking up situ!

Thanks for the acronym question- I had no idea either. Wink

Xx

AuntieMaggie · 10/11/2013 13:37

Here's the list of acronyms

LemonLovely · 10/11/2013 14:43
