Movement - what's normal? When did you first notice a pattern?

Hi, very anxious first-timer here. Just wondered when you first became aware of a pattern? I'm 22+3 with anterior placenta. Felt first movents about 18 weeks but was very hit and miss with a few days at a time with nothing. It's becoming more regular and I definitely feel something each day now but there's no pattern I'm aware of and some days baby is lots quieter than others. All seems very random for now and baby doesn't appear to generally respond to the usual cold drink, sugary snacks, lying on your left stuff. Have looked at the count the kicks site which didn't offer much useful on this, just said I should be watching for a pattern from 20 weeks. Any thoughts please?

Ps. Baby's had a fairly busy morning so not worried especially right now, but generally it's bothering me a bit.

I'm 20 weeks today - based on previous scans they think I may have an anterior placenta. I have my 20 week scan this morning so am waiting to see if it is confirmed. I first felt movements at about 18 weeks where for 2 days baby was active, then there was nothing for 4 days. My movements are still very hit and miss. I sometimes feel it at night but only briefly. I definitely don't have any kind of normal pattern! I'm going to speak to the sonographer about this morning, I'm sure she will do a grand job of reassuring me Smile x

Oh well let us know what the sonography says. And good luck and enjoy your scan.

Did a bit more googling (obviously always a BRILLIANT idea) and found this from a reliable source: www.tommys.org/page.aspx?pid=1114 Would seem that erratic movements eithout discernible pattern is normal until about 28 weeks. That's a relief!

Would still be interested to hear when other ladies did start to notice a pattern?

I'm 19+5 with dc3. I had an anterior placenta with ds2 so didn't feel any movements at all until 22-23 weeks and no kind of pattern until maybe 28weeks.

This time I've noticed movements following a bit of a pattern, for example when the kids are in bed and I sit down baby gets quite wriggly. I still go long periods of time during the day not feeling anything though which I think is quite normal.

I'd try not to worry too much but obviously if your ever concerned speak to your midwife :-)

I have anterior placenta and didn't feel anything I could defo guarantee was a movement until 23 weeks and no definite pattern until the late 20 odd weeks so try not to worry, it really must cushion the kicks until they are very big!

I had a low lying anterior placenta at the 20 week scan. It was really difficult to pinpoint any patterns for a long time and when the baby wouldn't move much for a day or so I did worry a lot, and even had it checked out couple of times. Now that I'm 32 weeks movements are stronger and I'm starting to notice some patterns.
Hopefully the placenta has shifted - they'll scan again at 34 weeks. It's really difficult not to worry especially when you start questioning your own body and your baby's movements. Think we've all been there so you have my sympathy.

I have anterior placenta and barely felt anything till around 22 weeks. I am nearly 27 weeks now and been twice to midwife to check out the heratbeat due to lack of movements. Turns out my baby just likes to tuck himself away at the back and I still can't really feel any clear patterns at this stage. However whenever I went to check, midwifes were very supportive and they kept on repeating you better come in than don't. Even if it is 10 times a week. But I would say from around 24 weeks I felt flutters at least in the morning and/or in the evening. sorry not very clear guidance, but at 22 weeks it is probably too early to have a pattern or have clear movevements feeling. It does help sometime to lie still for a bit on your left side and you can feel a gentle flutter and preferably to do it in the evening as they tend to be awake at that time.

PS midwife also told me that babies like people are affected by the weather, how much sleep they had, if they hungry, so some days they are active and some days they are not. If lying on left side does not work try to go on the right because it will be unsual position for the baby and baby will try to move

I'm 27+2. I started feeling movements around 19 weeks and a pattern of sorts by around 22 weeks. However, it's been completely off for the past few days, and I got so worried last night I called the hospital who basically told me not to worry until later in the pregnancy (HappyChick I am very envious of your experience with supportive midwives!)

I've now made myself a little spreadsheet to record movements - basically divided the day into 4 time slots and then am noting the type and intensity of movements I'm feeling. I think it's worth starting something like this as soon as you can because it's very hard to remember, thinking back, how much the baby was moving say this time last week.
