hi all,

help me work out if im being paranoid please?

im 30 wks and have had a day of limited movement- have had some but really light "flutters" and not the big kicks and wriggles ive been used to.

rang labour ward at 20:00. lay on left side, caffeine, cold water, sugar= 8 or so kicks in 45 mins- great, relax all ok

since then last 45 mins maybe 3 or 4 smaller wriggles but lots quieter...but might seem normal if i wasnt now obsessing over it. (midwife said monitor over 2 hrs)

im meant to ring back at 22:00. should i say all fine now and just go to sleep or be concerned at going quieter again?

am i just overthinking it now?

Please don't ignore this, ring the labour ward at 10pm and tell them you are coming in to be monitored. They will hook you up to the ctg machine, please do this, if anything it will give you peace of mind. You are experiencing reduced movement which is out of baby's routine and must be checked out. Do let us know how you get on.

thanks for the quick response. contrary baby had another good wriggle as i posted this and midwife has just said that if i got 8 or 9 kicks in an hour probably no need to worry just to keep an eye on it tomorrow, so think im off to sleep finally.

(assuming baby will let me, being kicked as i type. im sure he/she knows exactly how long to leave it to terrify me)

I think that counting a certain number of kicks per hour is bad advice to be honest. Is your baby moving less than he or she usually does, however much that is? If so you are better off going in. Any changes in your baby's movements should be checked.

Following advice is from the SANDS website:-

If you notice your baby is moving less than usual or if you have noticed a change in the pattern of movements, it may be the first sign that your baby is unwell and therefore it is essential that you contact your midwife or local maternity unit immediately so that your baby’s wellbeing can be assessed.

There is no specific number of movements that is normal. What is important is noticing and telling your midwife about any reduction or change in your baby’s normal movements.

If you feel your baby is moving less than normal, call your midwife or maternity unit. Don't wait for your next appointment.

I'm glad all is ok. you should have a look at this website countthekicks.org.uk
It's not about scaring but empowering and raising awareness of the importance of baby's movements. I hope you have a boringly uneventful last few weeks, very nearly there.

noteveryday you have written so eloquently what I was trying to say (I'm crap with words).

thanks all. I did have a good look at count the kicks earlier.

midwifes point was not to focus hour by hour and that a quiet spell after a wriggly spell was normal. feeling pretty reassured particularly after a more wriggly last 15 mins or so tho so happy to see what tomorrow brings now. honestly think this little alien just likes to wind me up!

midwives are lovely tho. ive rung twice (tonight and once before) and theyve been really happy to help and listen both times, so if anyone reading this is worried themselves just ring!
