Rite, so I'm wondering what to wash before baby comes and how much, for example;
I have quite a few newborn vests (some were gifts) would u wash all ready for arrival?
Would u wash bibs? How many before baby comes?
Would u wash cuddly toys given as gifts?
Would u wash like normal clothes to be worn from 0 -3 months?

I know it may be silly to ask but in my mind I don't know if I'm going over the top or if it makes sense to be well prepared?

Weirdly, I try not to get too carried away for some strange reason, I guess until she's in my arms I can't be totally at ease if that makes sense....

Dont wash anything thats new

I would wash hand me downs.

I washed all the baby things to get the shop smell and chemicals from manufacture out of them. Mind you it will not do any harm if you don't.

I just wanted to wash and iron and fold all those tiny cute little garments. And they smelled of us then, our washing powder.

Cuddly toys no. Just remove from packaging and leave in a ventilated room.

Good luck! When you start lining up all the cans of food in cupboards, wiping down skirting boards in inaccessible places and other such nesting, you'll know your time is close Wink

I'm confused after reading this as I had read that new clothes needs washing to get the chemicals out which are put in them to keep them shop fresh. :/

I've washed all newborn clothes, blankets, bedding brand new or not.

2nd hand stuff I gave a first wash with a stain remover and then a second wash with a gentler non-bio.

Haven't washed new bibs or toys.

Have put 0-3 and older clothes away and will wash nearer the time.

Have washed everything in non-bio.

I was wondering the same thing, also what washing powder do u recommend and do u use softener (sorry to hijack your thread ) Blush

CuteLittleToes · 06/11/2013 19:30

I've washed all clothes, except the "outdoor" ones. Also washed muslins, but not bibs.

Non-bio detergent and I used fabric softener for sensitive skin.

Always wondered why people washed new clothes, everyone talks about chemicals but what chemicals? Whoever said about shop fresh chemicals, was this from a reliable source and did they say what chemicals. Only asking because I don't usually wash new clothes but I would like to know if I should.

CuteLittleToes · 06/11/2013 19:38

Have a good sniff of those clothes... it does smell chemicals!

I normally don't wash my own new clothes, but it's different for baby. For me at least.

If you have quite a bit of clothes, then I'd say wash some (hand-me downs maybe) and then once you see how big is the baby you'll know if you need to wash more, or not in case you need to return/change something?

PinkParsnips · 06/11/2013 20:42

I wouldn't have ever thought to wash new clothes to be honest, I don't with my own, but I read something on here once about the chemicals they use to keep the clothes crease free etc and about how they can be dirtier than they look after being shipped from wherever they're made.

I washed everything new that my dc wore until they were about six months, to get rid of shop chemicals. Even now I wash their underwear and pjs before they wear them (but not other clothes anymore). We switched to non bio powder and sensitive fabric softener when our first was born and just wash all our clothes in it.

Hotmad · 06/11/2013 22:13

Some good advice there thanks.... I also use a non bio detergent, my friend recommended to me to use fairy or persil non bio.... It's a whole new world being a new mum with all the things to learn and it's little things like this that confuse me most!
