NT scan and blood test - really need some advice please

Hi - I'm totally new to this so please bear with me, don't know all the abbreviations yet :) I had my 12 week scan last week and the NT results were 3.9mm, so thats just above the 3.5mm limit they go to. I also had my bloods done so have been waiting for the results. They sent me to see a consultant yesterday, so that they could look at the NT again for me and to see what options we have for further testing etc if we want it. The lady yesterday spent about 30 mins measuring the NT and took around 30 pictures, whereas the first lady did a few measurements only and was very fast doing it in my opinion. The consultant yesterday came out with an average of 2.01mm. So pretty much half from last week. But after that she tells me that she's not accredited yet so they won't reduce the risk - whats the point in seeing a non accredited consultant? Also she said that her scan pictures weren't as clear. So today i get a call with my blood result when they test for Down's. They've given me 1 in 5. They won't base it on the result i got yesterday. Also they can't give me the amnio test yet because the placenta is on the back wall so too difficult to get too, so i have to wait till next friday. i'm going out of my mind and so is my husband, i don't know what to do with myself. I know my results can change due to age etc but I'm only just 30 and already have a very healthy 5 year old. Can anyone give me any advice at all please? Just to put my mind at rest. Really appreciate any help.

Hi there, I've no advice at all, I'm afraid, but wanted to post to say 'hi', and welcome to the site. Someone who's been in your shoes will likely post soon. Next Friday is a heck of a wait (and then for results), but if you feel that you really want the diagnostic definite yea or no then that sounds like the best bet for you and your husband.

There are some lovely posts on the site from women that had a similar result and had a 'typical' baby, and other lovely posts from women that learned that their babies were going to be just that bit more special than others after amnio. All of them have useful things to say about their experiences, so it may be worth reading some of those on the threads for antenatal testing/results (it's in the same area as 'pregnancy' talk, but you just expand the field it's in to get to testing, or search 'ante natal testing').

Good luck to you and your family to be.
x

Hi,

I haven't got any advice but I had nt scan, average 3.1mm and overall I've been given a 1 in 30 result.

I hate these statistics because it doesn't mean anything.

Anyway, dh and I are waiting for specialist 20 week scan next month where they will look for other indicators. It's difficult not to worry but I'm trying not to as I don't want this baby full of stress hormones.

Thank you all for your advice. It really helps. Catameringue I really hope everything works out for you x

Same here. NT of 3.9 odds with bloods of 1 in 5. A 10 day wait for amnio.
You are waiting for amnio because the placenta is at the back. IIRC, this would actually be because they could do CVS now, which takes cells from the placenta, but they cant reach it. Amnio takes fluid from around the baby and doesn't need the placenta, but cant be done until around 15 weeks. So sadly you have to wait for the amnio. Its shit, but necessary.
It sounds like your odds are all over the place, which is crap. Ive not a lot else to add really, just wanted to add a sympathetic ear. Good luck and keep busy.

Hi. Thank again for all your advice and kind comments. Well last Monday I managed to have the CVS. We paid for the Rapid Fish test and found out the day after that everything is completely fine. I completely broke down and cried with relief for about an hour. Also found out we are having a girl so I'm extra excited now. My heart goes out to anyone who has had these kind of issues. We couldn't afford the test realistically but the pain and stress of waiting was too much to cope with. Thanks again to you all.

What a relief, MrsO Flowers

I hope you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy- not easy when it seems there are a million things to worry about. You're not alone there, I can tell you Smile. It's the most natural thing in the world to be concerned, especially as these days there are so many sources of information at our fingertips/ advanced technology and medicine. I had a high-ish NT reading, but I wish I hadn't found out as I was worrying over nothing really- my chances of Downs came back as 1 in 1900.
