Severe Sickness Worry

Hello All,

I wonder if anyone has been in this situation or has any useful information that may help me???

I have just discovered that I am pregnant with my second child (4 weeks). During my first pregnancy I suffered from Hyperemesis (severe sickness)- vomiting approx 20 times a day, having two hospital admissions and losing over 2 stone in weight. I suffered from approx weeks 5-28. I am clearly anxious about being in the same state again this time, but also with a 3 year old to look after. I only feel a very slight nausea at the moment, and haven't yet been sick. Is there ANYTHING i can do to stop it happening again??? I tried all of the usual sickness remedies last time and nothing worked. Does anyone know of anything preventative that I can try?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi,and congratulations!!
I'm sorry but I dont have any advice for you, just wanted to bump this up for you. The only thing I could think of would be an alternate therapy maybe reflexology or some such thing. Hope someone else can give you better advice.

I used Nux Vomica, which is a homeopathic remedy and although it didn't take my nausea away, it made it more bearable. Fingers crossed for you that it doesn't get that bad!!

Hi. I am going to get you a link for the HG website I used to work for which is full on info, and please do feel free to CAT me- have supported many woman through this, and indeed have been on a drip myself for this condition.

IME there isn't much you can do except rest a lot(which does have a HUGE effect), and take any anti emetics yu might get prescribed- with ds2 I was on them from week 7 and managed to avoid hospitalization (wuith ds3 only needed them intermittently- )

There seems to be no way of telling if you will get HG again, have supported women who have had no symptoms at all second time, and others who got it worse. Worse Very rare mind you! Will go get link now but as I said, feel free to CAt me and I will let you have muy e-mail and telephone number

OK, site down ATM but the address is www.hyperemesis.org.uk, aka blooming awful

I was a voluntary worker btw, not masqueradinga s a professional!

tissy · 08/07/2006 16:47

this worked for me.

I would lend you my tape, but I lent it to another MNer, who never returned it, so you'll have to buy your own !

Thank you all so much.

It feels wonderful to have a few things up my sleeve, just in case it strikes again.

PeachyClair, will CAT you. thanks for the website info - I had found a link to it, but couldn't make it work.

Looking forward (?) to trying Nux Vomica, Preggie Pops and the CD. Maybe I won't have to... Here's hoping.

I had the same thing with ds1. With ds2 drank a glass of sparkling water before I got out of bed and ate two ginger nut biscuits. This helped me get going and get more food in which meant that the sickness didn't strike first thing. I drank ginger beer and lots of sparkling water, still do . It really helped for me. Fingers crossed you get an easier time of it to with number 2.

read somewhere can;t remember where, that if you're low in zinc you can get sickness worse. Took zinc with last pregnancy and only had 3 weeks of sickness compared with 15 wks with first 2. Obviousley check with gp though before taking anything. but it worked for me that and, ice lolly's

Dixia, if you read the medical stuff on the UK and US hyperemesis sites (I did as had HG with my first pg and much less badly with 2nd, I'm not a medic or anything) the medical evidence suggests that you should take anti-emetics as early as possible, maybe even before the vomiting actually starts. Have you talked to your GP about it?
When you say you used all the usual sickness remedies, do you just mean the traditional home remedies or actual drugs? Cyclizine kept me out of hospital....
In terms of the likelihood of it happening again, I understand that around two thirds of women who had it once get it the second time (so that's quite a nice big chance of you not getting it at all) but as Peachy said, it's most likely to be better this time rather than worse.
Vit B6 is useful too, if you're not already taking it. Apparently this works best if you take much bigger doses than the UK official safe level, but the US official safe level much higher so I never stressed too much about exceeding the UK limit!
I have been so much better this pg than last so I am keeping my fingers crossed that you will be too

Hi Dixia
I had severe HG with dd. I started at 5 wks 4 days same as you had been 20-30 x day and lost 1.5 stone.
Nothing worked, I refused the drugs.
I tried a homeopath which helped control the vomiting to 5-6 x a day
I ate porridge right before bed with brown sugar and milk, this gav me enough to wake up and eat first thing without being illi also felt some relief from sea sick bands, never took them off til I'd given birth.
I do recommend seeing a homeopath if you do see the onset of HG again
Best of luck it is so grim.
I'm 4 yrs on from that now and am trying to get pregnant again, so you do forget eventually.

Thanks Kathy and Piffle for your comments.

I live in Spain and have not yet visited the 'village doctor'. It is a bit more of a postcode lottery here! I am in a village that gets a doctor on a wednesday morning, and that's who you go to - unless you go down to the hospital! I am going to face the language barrier - and the fairly specific vocab that goes along with pregnancy and its problems - and go this week. I was on a variety of anti-sickness meds from my doctor in the UK during my first pregnancy. I was on suppositries (sp?), but nothing stopped me being sick - although acupunctuncture at 5.5months did slow it down.

The names of the drugs are different over here so I'm not sure if I will be able to identify what i am having and if it is the same.

I like the idea of eating a bowl of porridge before bed - I'll try to do that if the sickness sets in. The problem is that once you have stopped eating completely, its v hard to eat anything. Def must try not to get that far advanced this time.

Its nice hearing from people who went through it to!

I'll keep you informed on my progress.
xxx

Good luck Dixia!
I shouldn't think it would be too hard for the doc to work out which meds you had last time, if he has internet access, if you take along a list - there are lists online with all the different names for the same drugs.
IME the biggest problem is getting some medics to take you seriously if they've never come across HG before and just think you're talking about morning sickness, but I found it much easier the second time because you can tell them about your history - the fact that you were hospitalised ought to make them sit up. Fingers crossed.
