I think the Moby wrap is brilliant and can be easily used by different sized people. It's also suitable from birth - some slings are not. Have a google and see if there is a sling library near you, then you can hire and try before you buy to avoid expensive mistakes. Buying the right sling for you is quite an individual thing.

Second that advice - there are loads of babywearing groups where you can try slings (maybe have a look on FB for local ones); what fits one might not fit another!
Generally though, please avoid the "crotch danglers" like baby bjorns that don't support baby up to under the knees and may damage their hips.

I think the close caboo is a good one for beginners, easier to put on than a wrap.

I have a close (caboo) That both DH and I use. I like it very much and it was one of the few we could use straight away with DS who was low birth weight

I have a moby and a kari me. The kari me is stretchier and I think it's slightly longer. I totally recommend either. I wish I'd had one from the beginning- I had a wilkinet which is ok but not as good.

I have a baby Bjorn, moby wrap, ergo baby and a little life rucksack back carrier. I am a sling expert!!!

The Bjorn really hurts the shoulders and as others say, isn't good for the baby's hips. The moby is gret when they are little (up to about 4 or 5 months) but after that they will want to face outwards and although you can do that with Ainu it's not recommended on the instructions and isn't very comfortable. Also a lot of men don't go in for the cosy new born material wraps (they are aimed more at the mother to be honest as you can breastfeed in them, and thu do look quite feminine when they are on). The ergo was awesome up to 14 months and can be used on the back as well. Suitable from birth as an infant insert can be bought. Only downside is baby can't face outwards. I now have a rucksack by little life with a seat on the top for my toddler which she loves (but not suitable till about 8 or 9 months). I recommend the ergo baby for the first year and if DC likes it, it's suitable up to age 3. Xx

I would never recommend a baby face outwards in any carrier - from around 3 months you can do a hip carry in a ring sling and later on wrap or use a structured carrier on your back. It depends how long you want to sling for.

You can get more manly style wraps - my DH wraps and even has 2 of his very own that I don't use because they're too long! The relative size of you and your DH is pretty important.

A soft structured carrier like the ergo is a great all rounder and they come in manly designs, but our large 2,5 year old is too big to go in it comfortable now. Upsides are it's quick to put on and you can do front, back and hip carries. The infant insert is extra for an ergo but some are suitable from birth.

A Mei tei is a bit like a soft structured carrier but with wrap straps you cross round yourself. It's a good option if you and your DH are wildly different sizes.

Ring slings come into their own from about 3 months and you can again to front, back and hip carries although back carries with a ring sling are for experience users with larger children! They're also great for quick up and down carries.

A stretchy wrap will take you from birth to around 6 months, less if you have a heavy baby. You can only do front carries with them but the upside is you can just pop baby in and put as needed without rewrapping completely.

The must versatile of all is a woven wrap. They come in various lengths. I have 6s I still use today that I used when DS was a baby! You can do front, back and hip carries in these too and once you've got the basics of wrapping they are very secure.

Really you need to try some out. How pregnant are you?
