Sweep - would you take a toddler

I'm booked in for a sweep when I'll be just over 40 weeks, I usually take my 20 month with me and he just amuses himself in the room when I'm being checked over. I don't know whether I should take him when I get my sweep or take him to his gran's.

I stay a 5 minute walk from the clinic, so I'd need to drive 4 miles to drop him off at gran's Hmm.

Personally no, I won't take a child.

I had 2 with DD, it wasn't nice and on the way home DH had to stop the car as I thought I was going to throw up, felt very light headed and dizzy.

Can Gran come to yours?

I went to bed after mine, at 40wks a bit of rest might be good!

I wouldn't.
I had a sweep at 41 weeks and it was quite uncomfortable, she couldn't reach my cervix and it was all quite James herriot.

Thanks for the replies, DH is going to try and take the day off or at least try for a half day.

Unfortunately my MIL doesn't drive so I need to take my DS to her, hopefully tho I won't go much past my due date so I won't need a sweep.

ask for them to come and do it at home, then toddler can be in the other room

lovelylentils · 04/11/2013 18:52

I had to take my ds (20mo) to mine (I had 5 from 38 weeks) as no child care was available. I wasn't worried about him being present for the procedure as he was at floor level and I was up on the bed so he wouldn't really see anything anyway.

Yonididnaedaethat · 04/11/2013 18:58

Knowing my luck that's when he'd start playing up, just as I get on the bed Grin.

Home visit is a good idea. You can just pop him down in his cot for 10 mins or so with a book / toys. Or ask them to come during his nap time.

Personally for me i had 3 sweeps and they were quickly over with and done discreetly. I would have taken my toddler had it been difficult not to and at 20 minths they wont even understand whats goin on to think anything unusyal is happening!
After my sweeps i kept as active as i could to hopfully start labour, took a half hour uphill brisk walk after one, and it worked! And surely running around after a toddler doednt get more active!
Choice between 4 mile drive for 10 min app or
Take todder wth me..., second option wins hands down personally.
But you need to do what suits you best. Hope the sweep works!

Personally, these sorts of situations are where I say sod it, jettison the normal rules for an hour or two and bring out the heavy guns.

I'm talking: a good-size bag packed full of toddler treats. Nothing expensive necessarily but anything that is new to him - books, little toys, snacks etc - to keep him happily occupied for as long as it takes. To be doled out at a suitably measured pace.

This is only if you really do have to take him - as others have said, it would probably be better to make another arrangement if you can!

Good luck with the sweep!

Yep would take toddler and will be soon. . I just wouldn't have any other option! People who have childcare on tap just don't get that having a rest, getting some privacy, and feeling dizzy and sick are an option when you do all the childcare yourself! X x
