How to shift a stubborn UTI

Hello Ladies.

At my 12 week scan, about 2 weeks ago, some protein showed up in my wee. Nothing was mentioned to me, but within a few days, I started experiencing 'burning' wee and went to see my GP. I was prescribed Amoxicillin and a culture was sent off to the lab. Unfortunately, I continued to experience symptoms, so went back to the GP (a different one) who prescribed Cephalexin (Keflex). I've completed the course, but still have slightly warm and occasionally stinky wee... At a recent hospital app, I was asked for another sample (as the hospital picked up on the fact that I had a uti), which I couldn't provide because of being on antibiotics, so I've been told to do one 7 days after finishing my course...but that means another 7 days of the UTI in my system (if I don't go back for more antibiotics). I just want the infection to bog off and leave me alone, so am a) interested to hear if anyone is in the same boat; and b) if anyone has any handy tips for shifting the b#!^d???

Same here, although mine started before the pregnancy, 6+4 with an on/off uti for over a year. I've had several courses of ab and a cystoscopy but it's back again today. Hate the idea of taking more abs while pregnant, I know they say it's safe but what if the baby gets immune to them?

Hi both

Not had a UTI yet this pregnancy but used to get them prolifically when I was younger, at least once or twice a month. I finally got rid of it when I was prescribed nitrofurantoin (another anti-biotic). These seems to relieve my symptoms and get rid of any infection double quick. There is something in the antibiotic that stops the pain within the first few hours (I think it might neutralise your wee) and then the infection goes with the full course being taken.

Not sure if it's pregnancy safe but I would always recommend it if it is. Only had one UTI since and that was after having a catheter following an ectopic pregnancy last year. I was terrified it spelt the start of years of recurrent UTIs but one course of nitrofurantoin and it was gone.

I do find that drinking a lot of water every day helps keep UTIs at bay as well, can't speak for cranberry juice as everyone usually suggests as the taste is too gross for me.

Thanks for the advice, Delphi. I'll have a chat with the doctor about the treatment you recommend. In glad to hear that you've not had too much trouble since taking it.

I can also understand your fears Angelina. I'm not sure how it works, but if antibiotics are the only way of getting rid of the infection, it just has to be done... Sadly, they just don't seen to work! Maybe, Nitro is the way to go...

All the best to you both! Xx
