So work have organised a Christmas night out to a main chain hotel's bring a party to a party nights. The starter options are pate, melon or parsnip soup. So far I have avoided pate (as much as I love it). But who has had 1 portion for a special occasion????!!!

I'm expecting DD2 and relatively relaxed about what I'm eating compared to my first pregnancy (eg. steak doesn't have to be incinerated), but I think pâté's a no for me I'm afraid. I think it's the most risky source of listeria.

it is your own judgement call really

I wouldn't. Especially as catering at a large event could mean it is sat out longer than might be safe. It's one year. Why risk it?! :)

Hi,

It's up to you. I love pate but I'd probably avoid it, especially if it's served to a large number of people (might get too warm or something). However, before I found out I was pregnant, I was in Italy eating pates and raw meats and unpasteurised cheeses and swimming in parasite infected lakes and baby is okay. (wouldn't have if I'd known I was pregnant though)

How far along will you be? I avoided everything advised for the first trimester just because I was SO panicky whilst he was developing so much! I'm now 35 weeks and I had a LOVELY pate with onion marmalade starter at a family event about 3 weeks ago and it was divine!

My sister is a midwife and said that most things they advise against, in moderation are ok so I went with that! There are some European countries where pate is a diet staple and I believe they very rarely give it up during pregnancy.

There is also there issue of High level of vit A in Pate which can cause harm in pregnancy as well as Listeria.

Inglori0us · 02/11/2013 21:21

It's the liver in pate that's a bigger risk than the listeriosis. I would avoid. As Vixjane says, the Vit A is the issue. It can cause serious problems.

nannynome · 02/11/2013 21:24

I am really not fussy about foods during my pregnancy but pate and liver are the only ones I am very cautious about due to the amount of vitamin A. Chances of getting listeria etc are quite minimal but vitamin A can increase the risk of birth defects. Advised amounts for pregnancy are 5000 IU per day, pates can contain 429 IU in a single spoonful and a 100g serving of liver can contain unto 1250% of your daily vit A allowance!

I am eating almost everything else as long as I trust the source.

SinkyMalinks · 03/11/2013 09:41

My obstetrician friend told me the only things she avoided were liver and pâté (for the vit A). She did tell me this with a glass of red wine in her hand (her weekly), so every cloud...

Yummiliscious · 03/11/2013 09:49

I would go for the parsnip soup!yummy! I wouldnt touch the pate either... Listeria can have horrible effects on the developing baby's brain and thats a risk you dont want to take.

Julietee · 03/11/2013 11:30

The risks with pate are a) preformed vitamin a, and b) listeria.
The vit A thing is probably fine if you're not bingeing on it. The listeria thing? That's an odds question you'll have to weigh yourself.

Thanks everyone. You've all said what I was thinking. Just living in hope!!! Never mind, soup here I come!!
