Student midwife to do sweep?

I think I'm due a sweep tomorrow with dc3 @ 40+3.
last sweep went very well last baby but was done by consultant.
This time I have a regular appt with midwife at Dr s but she ways has this student with her who does everything.
I'm very grumpy already having passed my due date so wondering if I should ask for it or not. I really don't feel like having a student fumbling around up there but I really want to get things moving.

wwyd?

I know some people seem to have good sweep and others dreadful which is why I'm asking.

I would do it. And try other things too (sex...!)

My advice is if you are really uncomfortable with the student doing it, say so and ask the midwife to do it, or let the student have a go, and if she fails ask the midwife to try. When I was a student I was SOOO grateful for those women who "let me have a go" - but I was good at finding the cervix and always exuded an air of confidence.

However, it is your body and no one should do anything to it without your consent.

Good luck!

thanks baby. guess they have to practice on someone!! I've tried everything apart from sex....been walking a lot and running around after two toddlers....cleaning....shopping lol not even had a show yet or any signs though baby was well engaged last week.

I found students were more gentle/careful than the experienced midwives, and had one for pretty much everything (with qualified midwives checking add appropriate).

I would have ordered me and Dh a hot curry with a hot night of passion but mother is staying with us! :-(

I always say yes to letting student mw practice on me, they've got to practice on someone or they will never get it right, but that's my personal opinion you should do what you feel comfortable with.

Frecklesandspecs · 31/10/2013 11:53

yes I guess so teri. I ll give it a go. It s not like I Will not be experiencing pain in the next week or so anyway and hopefully it Will go ok....better than waiting for induction I imagine?

I agree to letting student mw have a go at everything, but that's just me. Yyou are allowed to decide! I liked it as I learned lots while the qualified mw explained things to the student.

Yy, student midwives usually a lot more gentle with everything, but my student midwife gave me a sweep at 40+3 and dd2 born that night so I say go for it. Good luck!Smile

I let a student midwife deliver my baby (her first). No biggie, couldn't have cared who delivered him at the time, just wanted him out!
She did tell me later though she almost dropped him, probably should have kept that to herself but she was very grateful for the experience.

I'd let a student practice on me. My first baby was delivered by a student mw, and my second was delivered by the same (then qualified) person.

I had a student midwife to help deliver my Ds, she also broke my waters in front of him to get him moving! She was fantastic, very capable, she was amazing during the birth. The midwife with her was on hand at all times, so I felt confident that she knew the student midwife was able to carry out the proceedure. It completely depends on you, and what you feel comfortable with. Maybe you should discuss it with them both first and take it from there.
