Hello :). Cut a long story short, in my pregnancy baby stopped growing at 32 weeks (everything turned out fine) and was born weighing just 4.8lbs. He was just 3 days early. My question is, will my second be a small baby too? I wouldn't say I'm small and neither is my partner, he's 5ft10 I'm 5ft6. Baby is now 17 months and doing great. He's actually taller than other babies his age.

Not necessarily, no.

Mine were 7lbs4 then 9lbs 11. I'm hoping this one won't be much bigger.

Hi, my dd wasn't as small as yours but weighed in at 6lbs full term which is considered quite a small baby these days.

Dc2 was 8lb full term. So no, my second wasn't small at all.

AngelsLieToKeepControl · 30/10/2013 19:32

Mine weighed

6lb 11oz
9lb 2oz
8lb 10oz
7lb 8oz
6lb
7lb 11oz

All quite random Grin

I am sure the doctors would keep a close eye on you and baby. I was measuring small with DC2 and was sent for an extra growth scan as DC1 had been small (6lb 14 oz at 40 + 2 - I don't personally think that is small). However DC2 arrived 10 days early at 6lb 8oz. I am 5 ft 9 and hubby 5 ft 10. I think some people do just have small babies

If your doctors have not found a concrete reason why your baby stopped growing, then it was possibly just random genetics. DD1 was born 10 days early but was 3.3kg (7lb something), whereas DD2 was a day over EDD and only 2.6kg, which is under 6lb - it utterly freaked me out that she was so small but she was completely healthy and the doctors weren't in the least worried. Now she's 11yo and has always remained small and delicately built (but incredibly determined and strong willed), whereas DD1 is reasonably tall. It makes sense when you look at our families - DH and I both have quite tall and quite short close relatives, although we're also both average sized, and I strongly suspect the 'little' gene has just skipped a generation. Do you have any petite grandparents/aunts etc?

MillyONaire · 30/10/2013 19:51

my first was 2 days early and 7lbs 4oz. My second was a full 2 weeks early and 8lb 3oz. I dread to think what he would've been like if he'd gone 2 weeks over Shock so no, ime, it doesn't seem that it follows a pattern.

GooFawkes · 30/10/2013 20:55

DS was 3 days before due date weighed 7lb 10oz (3.49kg)
DD1 was 2.5 weeks early, weighed 8lb 11oz (3.94kg)
DD2 was 4 weeks early, weighed 5lb 13oz (2.95kg)

Thanks everyone for your answers :). The explanation I got was just that "it is one of those things" so I guess there's no know if what could happen with the second one. It all seems very random going by these answers.

Nope, all your babies will be different sizes. My firstborn was 5lb 11oz at 2 weeks overdue, 2nd 7lb 6oz, 3rd 7lb 8oz & 4th 6lb 9oz at 4 days late so all mine have varied.

terilou87 · 30/10/2013 21:42

Mine were dc1 8lb1 41+6 dc2 7lb7 39week dc3 7lb3 41week and dc4 8lb3 41+5.
I think baby sizes vary I don't think it really matters about size of parents.

maggiethemagpie · 31/10/2013 10:23

my two were both small. DS born at 38+2 5lb9oz, DD born at 38+3 6lb1oz.

Maybe I just make em small but it's hard to see a pattern from only 2.

Not having any more now so I'll never know whether it is me or just random.

adaloveslace · 31/10/2013 10:31

In my experience, it's very possible. My first was born at 40 weeks and weighed 5lb14, second was born at 35 weeks weighing 3lb14.

Now pregnant with my third and had a conversation with my obstetrician today about this very question. He says it's likely this one will be small but he's going to do everything he can to preempt any issues like infection, preeclampsia etc.

Some people DO just make small babies though. (DS is now 5 and still miniature.)

clare8allthepies · 31/10/2013 10:41

DD was 6 pounds (1 week overdue) which I didn't think was that small - 2nd centile though apparently. This time I've been having regular growth scans to check on size, this DD is small too but following line on growth chart. I must just make small babies, I'm only 5 foot 2 though Smile

RapunzelsHairBrush · 31/10/2013 10:44

I had 2 smallish babies - DD 6lb 5oz at 39+3 and DS 6 lb 15oz at 38+6. Both started out on roughly the same centile but whilst DD grew slowly and eventually is now between the 50th and 75th centiles for weight and height (she seems quite tall though) DS shot straight up and has stayed roughly on the 50th since the first week. I was a small baby (6lb 6oz) and I think so was my DH, although he certainly isn't now at 6ft and on the ahem larger size, although I am still relatively petite.

I believe that having a smaller baby first time, for whatever reason, means you may be monitored more closely in your second pregnancy, but it doesn't necessarily follow that you will have another small one I don't think, it's more a 'just in case'.

Good luck.
