Achy hips already?! I'm only 19 weeks...

Is it just because I'm laying on my sides of a night time? Tonight is the worst it's been so far. I can't get comfy in bed, and hate lying on my side at the best of times. Think I need to turn into a vampire and sleep upside or stood up in a coffin Hmm

Poor you...

I've ended up folding a single duvet in half lengthwise and putting it under my side of the fitted sheet, which has helped a bit (you'd think my natural padding would do the trick but no). Almost forked out for a memory foam mattress topper but as I've only got 5 weeks to go I thought I'd try and hang on... Might be worth you considering though!

Have you got any other symptoms as I've had this as part of pelvic girdle pain/symphasis pubis disorder. I've found the piriformis (bum muscle) stretch helpful - look it up on YouTube if you are interested.

Snobble · 30/10/2013 12:37

Oh! Its not just me. Im 18+1 and i've been getting terrible hip and lower back ache. Im tempted to invest in a pregnancy sleeping pillow now, its not nice is it :(

Noodles123 · 30/10/2013 12:53

I was bad around 24 weeks but tbh it got better again! Sleeping with a pillow between legs helped loads, I'm 30 weeks now and fine again.

tsw · 30/10/2013 16:54

I've had my dodgy hip since 6 weeks!!! I have started to get pubic pain now & am 18 weeks. Who knows why one hip hurts & the other doesn't.

K8eee · 30/10/2013 19:21

It feels horrible:( I have got a single duvet from dss bed, so I may well pop that under the the sheet tonight to see if that helps. I did try the pillow between my legs last night, and I couldn't really get comfy Hmm reading up on the sleep genii pillows they're not as great as they're made out to be.

With regard to pgp I'm not sure what other symptoms are related to it but I have been gettin the odd lot of pins and needles down my legs Confused

I have this as well, wake up at least once a night needing to turn over because of the pain in my hips and my husband says I toss and turn in my sleep now way more now than I used to. Tried sleeping with a pillow between my knees but it was on the other side of the room when I woke up in the morning and really don't want to pay all that money for one of the long ones so hoping I can tough it out for the next 10 weeks! I know its not reccomended but I really find sleeping on my back helps. No other signs of spd though I was wondering if it could be because of that (though I have felt like I've a pulled muscle in my vagina for the last 2 months, may or may not be related, lol)

K8eee · 30/10/2013 20:18

Hmm Poor you mrssmith. I have at least 20 weeks to go.......

I've had some aching in my public bone today but not sure if that's pgp or because I've done too much.

I had spd with dd1, 23 weeks with dd2 now and felt the familiar twinges for a while now. My tip tip for managing it is to avoid over straining hip joints during the day, then it should be less uncomfortable at night.

Basically never stand on one leg! Eg put both feet out of car before standing up, sit down to put on knickers/socks. At night keep knees together in bed when rolling over, with pillow between. At least birth is the cure!

K8eee · 30/10/2013 20:29

Thanks milkjetmum! Shall try and remember that Smile take it I should mention it to my mw at the next appointment?

Can you get referral to physiotherapist? It's not normal to be in pain. It's a sign there is a problem.

It could be something to do with you being out of alignment due to pregnancy hormones making your joints hypermobile.

A Physio can tell what the problem is, manipulate you back into place & give you exercises to keep it better.

Is this your second? I went back to same amount of pain as I had at 6months with ds from early on. Physio put me right. Feel much better now.

milkjetmum · 30/10/2013 20:43

Yes I would. My midwife referred me for a one off group physio session when I was expecting dd1 and got those kind of tips I mentioned, I found it useful (plus met some other local mums to be).

Best not to ignore it as for some people it can become very painful and start affecting walking/climbing stairs. Hopefully you will catch it early and avoid it getting too sore.

K8eee · 30/10/2013 20:44

I guess I can but haven't got an appt with me for 2 weeks. I'm away at my parents next week but should have a whole bed to myself as dh is away for work so I should be ok to wait.

A few years ago I had an awful back and my hips were actually out of line minutely. I went and saw a chiropractor who managed to sort them out. No this is my first Blush

If you are getting pins and needles that is a sign of sciatica.... As I mentioned up thread this can be caused by your piriformis muscle being in spasm as your pelvis shifts around due to the prgnancy hormones (I.e. PGP). The sciatic nerve runs right next to or though the muscle depending on your physiology. The muscle also attaches near your outer hip so for me that's what causes the hip pain when lying down.

Do get a physio referral but you can also get a lot from YouTube and the web... My experience of NHS physio is that they rarely do hands on work so trying the exercises yourself can give you some relief while you are waiting or get a trusty tennis ball and use it to massage your bum and lower back, tender spots = unhappy muscles.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 30/10/2013 21:04

Yes, I would be inclined to give the physio a miss op, they rarely do any hands on manipulation in my experience, what I would suggest however is getting an appointment with a chiro as they will be able to manipulate you and help ease any discomforts.

I'm on a 3rd pregnancy now and I get pelvic girdle pain, stiffness and sore hips. I had one session with the chiro, she said one on my hips had locked which was causing my problems so she did her thing and lo and behold I slept pain free that night! I see her once a week now for adjustments and maintenance and its well worth paying privately for (rarely do nhs fund chiro for pgp)

I still get the pelvic pain if I overdo it, move to quickly, lift heavy things etc but it's eased the hip pain considerably.

tertle · 30/10/2013 22:20

I've just bought a pregnancy pillow and it's great - I feel as though I can finally get comfy in bed. Would also follow other recommendations and mention to your doctor - physio or other treatment can definitely help.

Julietee · 31/10/2013 08:09

Just wanted to reassure you that I've had bad hips at night since about 6 weeks. Some relief starting from about 21 weeks, for some reason (I'm not 23.5 weeks), which is very welcome! A dream genii has helped a great deal in my case, as has getting a mattress topper.

K8eee · 31/10/2013 12:52

Well I slept a lot better last night thanks to a single duvet under the sheet Smile shall defo mention it to my midwife but will try and avoid what you've all suggested.

The pins & needles have tended to be on the outside of my right thigh. Not sure if they makes a difference.

I had bad hip ache at night since about 15 weeks. I now have lots of pillows raising me from my hips upwards which takes the pressure off them and I am sleeping really well now with no pain! Been sleeping like this for about 3 weeks now.
