This is quite possibly the most nurotic thing I've ever written, but I really can't help that it's all I can think about!

I am 17 weeks pregnant today (first pregnancy), and this time last week I felt my baby move for the first time. Every day since I have felt movement, sometimes a number of times each day, that is up until yesterday... I have felt nothing at all since a flicker on Sunday evening and I am really starting to worry.

Can anyone tell me whether I am just worrying for nothing or if I should be calling my Midwife??

*Neurotic

It's almost certainly fine as they can change position at this stage and no longer be felt but to be on the safe side I'd call to get checked. I went in a couple of times and they were lovely about it and would much rather check and all be fine

Thank you!!

I really do think I would feel better if I checked, but I was worried they'd treat me like a mad woman. It's good to know you have been in the same boat and were treated with understanding. In such a short time, if gotten so find of those flutters, I really do miss them!

Totally normal. I'm 22 weeks with DC3 and there are still days when I feel virtually nothing, as well as days when baby moves loads.

impecuniousmarmoset · 29/10/2013 13:13

But yes, no harm in getting checked out!

The baby has likely just found a crevice to kick in where you can't feel it (against your back for example) but if you are worried get checked and who cares if they think you're a mad woman!
i've gone in twice for reduced movements, once at 24 weeks and again at 28, both times the baby started kicked frantically as i sat waiting in triage... just having a laugh i think.

Now, you have to understand that I am a serious worrier.... I would definitely get it checked out. Obviously I'm super paranoid, and this is the result of one complicated pregnancy, followed by an missed miscarriage at 12 weeks then another (more) complicated pregnancy. With that 3rd pregnancy I'd already had about 4 scans by 12 weeks, and another 10 or so by the time he was born a month early.

I would just have to know. At 17 weeks you might be past the point where EPU will see you, if so you need to go to maternity triage. Likely there will be nothing wrong. They probably won't be able to hear a heart beat at this stage, so you will need to be scanned to see it. At 17 weeks, if things have gone wrong there is nothing that can be done, but it is IMO best to know and to be able to stop worrying.

I've just worried about the same (am 18+3 however) so just bought myself a doppler. No idea why I think that will help but there you go!

Quodlibet · 29/10/2013 22:05

I had loads of periods like this between 14 weeks when I started feeling baby, and probably only stopped worrying about inconsistent movement at about 28 weeks when movements had definitely established patterns. IMO there's a good reason they advise counting the kicks from 28 weeks, as before then they can be so varied depending on baby's position. Like others have said, at 17 weeks the baby is so little it can go into hiding. There's no harm in getting checked if you are really worried though...

It's still quite small, but err on the side of caution if it makes you feel at ease and call the mw. I'd not worry myself so early, but I'm not a worrier.
Please, please don't rely in your own Doppler if you're not a mw tsw & op. the maternal heartbeat is easily picked up and I'm afraid I've seen some tragic cases where the mum didn't go to the hospital despite reduced fetal movement because they listened in to their own heartbeat. :(
