I was just wondering what to expect when I go for mine tomorrow, the letter says its an hour and half long. I cant imagine that putting my information into a computer and having a quick chat would take that long surely? will there be an examination or anything like that? Obviously this is my first and have no clue what to expect I told DP not to take the time off as itll be boring admin stuff but now its tomorrow im really nervous and don't want to go alone Confused Any ladies with advice or tales to tell on the subject I would be really grateful Smile.

the booking appointment goes through your medicial history like previoues pregnancys and other stuff they put it all in your maternity notes so it does take ages they will also take blood for your blood group and other things it is a rather long boring appointment but once this one is done then rest is quicker gl and congrats

Oh that doesn't sound too bad other than the bloods :( mine shouldn't be too long then my medical history is pretty boring. Will they give me the maternity notes or keep them? sorry for all the questions I normally harass my sisters but they've been pretty M.I.A. since I found out Sad thanks princess Smile

Congratulations Op. Booking in appointment was all forms, forms, forms forms, blood test and a wee test. That was it really. It is very boring.

LittlePeaPod · 28/10/2013 18:46

And you will get your notes to take home...

I couldn't imagine what I would have to say for an hour, but that was how long it took, bloods were quick in comparison to note writing, they also gave me lots if leaflets on things like antenatal classes, physio diet etc, it was nice opportunity to ask questions so might be worth jotting down anything that has been playing on your mind, e.g I was struggling with sickness andcouldn't take big tablets, so asked about smaller alternatives!?
I
she did give me my notes to keep, might also give you 12wk scan date? or at least do the referral!

I'm pleased I told DP to go to work if its that boring, I can just imagine him fidgeting and playing with things like a toddler Grin got my scan next Monday got both appointments through the post, kind of irritated me as I didn't get a choice of day and time especially as I work but unfortunately where I live that's rare wcyd. I'm terrified I'm gonna lose the notes I've even had nightmares about it lol Thanks guys I feel much better now

They weigh you, take your height too, talk about your choices at 12 weeks scan etc, ie. do you want the blood test and nuchal scan combined test? They'll explain the whys and what nots. Also discuss things like flu jab etc. an hour and a half goes fast! Might be a good idea to quickly ask your DH about what inoculations he's had/ has he had measles and any other childhood diseases etc. I'm sure that came up in mine. That said, my DH was with me and fairly useless!!

EeyoreIsh · 28/10/2013 19:00

Most of mine was spent trying to get the computer to work Grin

one thing I didn't realise was that you'll be asked questions about your family medical history. worth finding out if there are any congenital problems. I can't remember what they asked exactly, heart, diabetes etc.

bundaberg · 28/10/2013 19:04

it takes forever! there are a LOT of questions.

woodlandwanderwoman · 28/10/2013 19:05

It's worth asking DP about his family's medical history too if he isn't joining you. Specifically any heart / genetic / hereditary conditions etc he might be aware of. Ask your parents about their sides of the family too in case you don't know already. If you can find out family history regards births / miscarriages etc it may also be valuable to help doctors paint a good picture of any risks.

The goal is not just to fill out forms but it will also be to establish if you might be a "high risk" pregnancy, ie... Need a few extra checks along the way.

The conversation is boring but it's actually also a good chance for you to ask loads of questions you won't have thought of. If you have any now, write them down.

Never known of anyone have a choice of day/time for appointments, most places only do appointments on certain days so you have to fit around them. It should only be a problem until you've told work, you're entitled to paid time off for antenatal appointments.

SweetPea86 · 28/10/2013 19:13

Mine was about 1 hour and half and I quite enjoyed it my midwife was really funny and relaxed. Got through family history takes ur bloods, urine test. And answers any questions. It will fly by
