Palpitations. Normal?

Is it normal to suffer from palpitations in pregnancy? I'm 18 weeks and had them on and off this evening despite not doing anything strenuous. Is this another crazy hormone thing or should I be worried?

Quite normal - I'm 18wks+3 and had a few palpitations a few hours ago actually Smile

Since finding out about my pregnancy I have had about 4 different episodes of palpitations, the earliest when I was about 8weeks gone I think. As long as they are infrequent and short lived and don't cause you to get dizzy/faint etc then try not to worry yourself.

It is because of how much your blood volume is increasing, it just puts that little bit of an extra strain on your heart and palpitations can be a result of that.

Just let your midwife know but I don't think she'll be too worried. She may advise you see your GP if they really impact on you but hopefully it won't come to that.

Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile

It depends how long they last. If they last for an hour or more I'd go into A&E / maternity ward.

I had palpitations a couple of weeks ago (at 32 weeks) that came and went for over 3 hours. Quite painful ones. Called triage and they said to come in and did some tests. All was fine but I was told to come straight back if it happened again.

Ive been having these for weeks, ile be 21 weeks this week. I had my 20 week scan on thurs and mentioned these palpitations to the consultant and she sent me for an ecg to be on safe side; said my heart couldnt be any better if i tried.
So it IS just one of those pg related things. I never had them with dc1/2 or not bad enough to remember but this time im making up for it.
Hopfully this will be reassuring for you but id still mention it to your doc if its going to be causing you worry.

That's a relief, thank you. I didn't have it with DS so it freaked me out a bit this time.
