Had a headache all week. When I wake up I feel my head pounding. Feels like a tension headache. After work been resting this afternoon and even had frozen peas on my head and just took some parcetomol. Nothing's helping. It's all on the top of my head and my eye feels like pressure too.

I'm 16 weeks and felt rubbish from week 4 or 5 was starting to feel a bit better now got lumbered with this bloody headache.

Don't know if its due to hormones or just a bit run down and stressed .

Any other remedies that may help :( x

You need to get your BP and urine checked asap.

Are your eyes ok? Can you see allright?

Any heartburn or pain under your ribs?

urtwistingmymelonman · 25/10/2013 19:17

although I would advise anyone with this to get checked out I just wanted to say that I had awful long-lasting headaches for weeks early on.
im now 35+2 and all is well so don't panic.
your peace of mind is important so get it checked!

SweetPea86 · 25/10/2013 19:22

3 little frogs should I be worried, I thought it could be a tension headache as I've been stressed this week.

I've had this headache before preganacy when a little run down.

No pain in ribs and my eye sight is fine just bit of pressure around my eye and nose.

I'm worrying a little now lol

You need to get your BP checked as a matter of some urgency.

If there is no cause for concern, then head massage, general destressing and pg-safe doses of paracetamol might be worth trying.

LadyMedea · 25/10/2013 19:35

Unlikely to be pre eclampsia at 16 weeks but you still need to see your midwife or doctor ASAP

Windywinston · 25/10/2013 19:39

Agree with other posters, headaches should be mentioned to mw or dr asap. However, don't panic, it may well be nothing.

I was plagued by monster headaches during my second trimester and there was nothin wrong with me at all. But you should always play it safe just in case.

ParsonsPig · 25/10/2013 19:39

I had similar symptoms and think it was sinus pain. Tried Sterimar (sp) nasal spray a few times a day and it really helped ease my headache!! Weird but true!! Hope you feel better.

SweetPea86 · 25/10/2013 19:44

I've just rang my local advice line and spoke to a midwife she said it sounds like a tension headache and it's a little early for BP so just to take parcetmeol and rest.

The pressure is behind my nose and eye so it does sound like sinus.

Hard not to think its pregnancy lol

She did say it doesn't sound pregnancy related and if it gets worse to see my GP

My midwife advised drinking lots and lots of water as dehydration can cause headaches and make them worse. Sometimes it helped, sometimes not!

urtwistingmymelonman · 25/10/2013 19:47

yes mine were sinusy.

Hawkmoth · 25/10/2013 19:50

I would see a doctor and ask for some stronger painkillers, as well as ruling out anything untoward. It could be any number of things.

I saw an OOH doctor and following a twenty minute consultation I did get some strong cocodamol when pregnant for migraines, so if it's terrible you are not limited to paracetamol.

Do talk to someone though.

McBaby · 25/10/2013 19:50

I get similar hadaches too at the start of second trimester. I find v hard to get rid of but soluble paracetamol work much better and the soothe and cool cold strips then as much rest as possible.

PinkParsnips · 25/10/2013 19:54

I had something very similar around 16 weeks which carried on for about 2 weeks and then went away.

It came back at 33 weeks along with flashing lights in my eyes so they were worried about pre-eclampsia but they decided it was my first ever migraine so in hindsight it was probably the same thing at 16 weeks.

The midwife definitely said keep a close eye on it though even so early on as they are the same symptoms as pre-eclampsia and its better to get checked out.

Xenadog · 25/10/2013 20:23

If it is sinus pain then you can use nasal n spray decongestants - the doctor at the hospital told me it was safe to as I really suffer from sinus problems. Don't take the tablets though. I would also suggest you use steam inhalers and get someone to give you a facial massage all around your eyes, cheeks and brow - this really does work wonders. Some paracetamol would be of some use too.

I would suggest you get your Bp taken as well just to rule out anything too nasty.

3littlefrogs · 25/10/2013 20:41

Pre-eclampsia is rare at 16 weeks, but severe headache that lasts a week should always be checked out IMO. Especially in pregnancy.

It is impossible to diagnose anything safely over the internet TBH.

TobyLerone · 25/10/2013 22:35

I had a horrendous headache for the whole of week 16. I could barely see, it was waking me up in the night...if I could have chopped my head off, I would have done so cheerfully.

My mw said it's very normal at that stage of pregnancy. Paracetamol, fluids, peace, rest and a cold flannel on your forehead / back of your neck will help a bit. Mw recommended that 4Head stick, which did help temporarily, and migraine cold packs.

EmB1715 · 26/10/2013 00:06

Might be a rubbish suggestion but if it is tension/sinus problem give a 4head stick a try!

minipie · 26/10/2013 00:21

Hot bath.

Lie back in bath until your entire head is submerged, except your nose for breathing through.

Lie there and breathe slowly until you are genuinely relaxed.

Then go to bed and sleep.

Only thing that worked for me....

RubyGoat · 26/10/2013 00:44

I get awful migraines so I tried pretty much everything when I was pregnant. Try:

Head massage: this is quite a good basic tutorial. You can pick up some tips on doing it for yourself, or if possible, get someone else to do it for you. this one is short but shows another technique you can do yourself.

4head stick - on forehead, temples, back of neck & immediately behind your ears. Don't use it immediately after washing your face unless you've moisturised, as it needs some oil in the skin in order to work. And don't touch your eyes after putting it on - it stings!

If you think it may be a sinus thing & decide to get something from a pharmacy - check the packet. A surprisingly high number of cold remedies, congestion relief etc, have camphor in - not recommended during pregnancy. There may be other things that are not allowed - but I was surprised by this one, & it's in a lot of throat sweets etc.

Cold flannel or those cold headache stick-on patches if you can afford them (if cool things help).
