Any rhesus negative women gone on to have second and 3rd happy healthy pregnancies and babies

Hi all,

I have posted on here recently about this but would really love to hear from any women who are rhesus negative blood type and who have gone on to have a second baby or even more than two and had no problems. I am pregnant with my second baby and am rhesus negative. I am only in the early stages, under 10 weeks and my first baby was rhesus positive but I had anti d at 28 weeks and after two bleeds etc but I have read so much about it being more of an issue second time round. Can anyone put my mind at rest? You have to wonder years ago before anti d how rhesus negative women managed but surely they didn't all have unhealthy pregnancies. Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated as I'm a bit of a worrier x

Another one here, rh- with rh+ DD and DH. On my second pregnancy and at 30 weeks all is fine, no antibodies. I received an anti D injection at 25 weeks and after birth with DD, and at 26 weeks with this pregnancy. As other posters have said, you should be tested for irregular antibodies anyway at least once during pregnancy, so you are likely to know if (and this is very rare), a problem develops. Treatment options are also better than they used to be, though obviously not a position you would choose to be in. HTH.

Pearljam, I am seriously impressed, rh- or not at 6 babies. Halloween Smile

It took me three years to build up the courage for no 2, and I'm one of five myself.

awakemysoull · 25/10/2013 12:47

I'm rhesus negative and both my dds were positive. I had a couple of anti d injections and everything was fine

Sleepwhenidie · 25/10/2013 12:51

Same for me, rhesus neg, (anti D) 3 healthy children, no problems, I really don't think it's a big deal these days.

ksrwr · 25/10/2013 12:54

Hi,
my mum is rhesus negative, as am i.
my younger sister and my younger brother aren't rhesus negative, and she had no complications with any of us.

I have one child, she's not rhesus negative, i had the Anti-D injections and all was fine.

I'm Rh-, DD1 (and DH thankfully!!) are both Rh+. They checked me for antibodies in this pregnancy before giving me my anti D (only one shot now at 28 weeks, rather than two at 28 and 34 weeks). So if DC1 turns out to be RH+ they will check that your body has not produced antibodies (which it really should not have done if you had your jabs) and even if it has, it would only cause problems for a subsequent Rh+ baby (so 50% chance) and even then, they know what to look for and how to treat it.

Apparently there is a school of thought that it was an antibody thing like this (but not D antibodies) that caused all Henry VIII's problems. I think only one of his partners ever produced a second live baby (not a wife - otherwise the course of history would be quite different, but a courtesan). Amazing that something so common is now so readily treated/prevented. I love modern medicine!!

MrRected · 25/10/2013 12:57

I a Rh-. Had three Rh+ babies - don't remember having Anti D with the last 2. Did have it with DS1 as I gad a bleed at 12 weeks.

Never once really gave it any thought.

O neg here and two completely healthy pregnancies. I remember something about having to have anti-d but otherwise no problems at all.

Your doctor should have told you that that is nothing to worry about.

I am b-, boy1 was a+, boy2 as well.

I just had the anti-D and a doc who reassured me that, anyway, even without the anti-D, there is only a teeny tiny risk, as baby's and mum's blood never really mix, it is like a completely different "eco system" in the womb.

You will be fine, don't google and internet about it, just ask the doctor, this is really not a problem

thecakeisalie · 25/10/2013 13:08

I'm now 17+6 with dc3. Both my boys are rh+ so anti d during and after pregnancy. No problems getting pregnant or miscarriages. Proper care and anti d should mean no complications in most cases so I wouldn't worry too much.

CointreauVersial · 25/10/2013 13:11

No problems here, because I had the foresight to marry a Rh- man!

I didn't even bother with the Anti-D after the second pg.

My aunt had six children and had progressive problems with each "blue baby", but that was a long while ago and all survived OK.

Pendulum · 25/10/2013 13:15

I did have probs with my dd1, despite having anti_D and no known bleeds she was born with pathological jaundice as a a result of the rhesus in compatibility, was in special care and nearly had transfusion. She's fjne now. I I was heavily quizzed by a number of junior doctors but no one ever told me they had got to the bottom of it.

Dd2, no problems at all although I don't know whether she is positive or negative.

Not trying to worry you op because as I said she was in good hands and is fine, but it is a good idea to be alert in you situation.

lottieandmia · 25/10/2013 13:24

Rh- here and I have three Rh+ children. I also refused the anti-d shots in pregnancy. A doctor once told me that not everyone even needs anti-d after a delivery but it's given as a precaution.

PumpkinPie2013 · 25/10/2013 13:49

I'm Rh- but only on my first baby and had antiD at 28 weeks as DH is Rh+

However, my mum is Rh- and had 3 of us with me being in the middle and the only one to also be Rh-. She had no issues with any pregnancy.

Also, my mum's mum had 3 children, my mum is the youngest (now 51) and the only one to be Rh- and my Nan had no problems either x

nocarsgo · 25/10/2013 14:05

I'm off to Google crackpot theories about Rh- blood groups, sounds fun!

mrsm22 · 25/10/2013 14:57

Thank you evryone who has responded so far x

noscargo try here. I especially like the children of gods theory and the alien/reptilian origin one. Because of course it couldn't just be a deletion in our genetic code...Halloween Confused

more usefully, I did learn elsewhere that some people blood typed as RhD negative in fact are RhD positive but the gene is just very weakly expressed. I however, am properly RhD negative (gene deletion) and it is this group which has a higher risk of sensitization, especially after blood transfusion. Boo.

It is clear that this pregnancy malarkey is getting old and I need to find something more useful to do!

enjoyingscience · 25/10/2013 16:36

The anti-D is incredibly effective at preventing problems. Please try not to worry - and ask your GP/midwife to explain how the jab works and why 'blue babies' really are virtually unheard of now.

I'm Rh- and on baby #2 (I'm O neg, so have totally bald blood cells, ha!). It doesn't worry me.

lottieandmia · 25/10/2013 21:23

Oh lol yes the reptilian alien theory.

sarahleanne · 25/10/2013 21:46

im O NEG and on 3rd pregnancy. No problems with either pregnancy apart from a couple of bleeds. Had anti D after DS as he was Positive.

Fakebook · 25/10/2013 21:51

I'm rhesus negative and am pregnant with dc3. I did have 4 mc's between dc1 and dc2, but that wasn't anything to do with being rh -tive. I've opted not to have the anti d with this pregnancy. I have no idea what blood group my children are. They're both fine.

I had no idea about wacky theories about rh negative people. That's a good link.

reelingintheyears · 25/10/2013 21:54

I did, many moons ago, I had the anti D after DD was born and no problems with two further pregnancies.

DS1 (second child) is B+, DS2 is O - and I don't know DDs group.
I'm B-.
