Iv recently Been told I am likely to develop gestational diabetes and after seeing doctors/ nurses at hospital iv been told I need to do a blood sugar test 4 times a day, so iv done them today, the results were 5.4 fasting/ morning 6.7 1 hour after breakfast 5.6 1 hour after dinner and 9.6 1 hour after tea, now I know 5,5 or under is for morning but that's it? Confused what should the result be under after eating? I'm surprised the hospital didn't tell me, I'm worrying as 9.6 sounds high to me, any advice would be appreciated. X x

Hi Terilou
Sorry to hear you've got gestational diabetes. I've had it since week 14 & now 28 weeks. It sucks but you get used to it Wink I was told under 5.5 first thing before breakfast then under 8 one hour after eating or under 7 two hours after eating. Hope this helps Smile x

I'm a type one diabetic and have been told that I only want a rise in blood sugars of about 2.5 one hour after eating. So test just before eating then about an hour later test again and see what the rise is. Looking at your results they are a bit on the high side but not worryingly high so to me your doing well so far and just need to make a few adjustments, though of course I'm not a medical professional! Have you seen a midwife or diabetes nurse since you started testing? they'll be able to give you all the information you need so if not try to get an appointment to see them.

No my next appointment is a week and half away, the consultant put me on metformin too, I don't really know what it does, or if this will help keep my results down.

I had gestational diabetes, diet controlled. I was told a reading under 7.8 1 hour after eating was normal. Don't read the horror stories, I was constantly being told I would have a huge baby, he was 6lb 4.5oz! I had a great consultant and was told the actual increased risk of problems other than a big baby is really small. Please don't panic. It really is nothing to worry about once you get your head around it. Were you given a number for the dietitian? Good luck x
