Anyone got experience of single sac (Monoamniotic) twins?

I've just had my dating scan and found out I'm having twins, which I'm really excited about! The sonographer said they were in a single sac with one placenta and then booked me in for loads of scans which I thought was excessive. I then made the mistake of googling it and have succeeded in frightening the life out of myself.

I was just wondering if anyone had gone through this and could give me some advice on what to expect and if it's true they only have a 50% survival rate?

Thank you

Congratulations :)

MCMA twins are very rare and the chances of them finding a dividing membrane between the babies at your next scan is high. There are quite a few women on here with twins who were initially told they were MCMA but turned out to be MCDA. Hopefully this is what happens to you at your next scan.

However, I know of two women who had MCMA pregnancies and both their babies were born healthy (but prematurely at 32 weeks).

Good luck :)

Thank you, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's a mis-diagnosis but now I've read so much on Monoamniotic twins I know there's nothing I can do and the worst thing I can do is stress about it so I'm just going to take one day at a time and hope for the best!

My first set of twins were MCMA. I carried them to 37+3 and had a unplanned natural delivery. They both were healthy weighing around 5lbs and came home soon after. They are now very active, lovable 1 year old boys.

They will monitor you more closely likely every 2 weeks instead of 4. Most are delivered by c-section around 34 weeks due to risk of cord compression/entanglement and natural birth is very risk as the birth of one twin can endanger the life of the 2nd by pulling the placenta, and possibly cause it to come away.

I continued on like it was normal twin pregnancy just had more scans and tests than DC twins.

I can't offer any advice as I'm expecting DCDA twins but you might find it helpful to also post on the Multiple Births forum too. It's here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/multiple_births
