I have been fearing snow being around when I go into labour. Due end of Jan and hospital is 30 miles away and at the top of a few hills! Eek!

Manchesterhistorygirl · 22/10/2013 13:10

This was me in 2010. I did make it to the hospital, but only because we had a4x4, my parents couldn't make it onto my estate because of the snow! I did check and mountain rescue do bring midwives out to you and will assist in transfers to hospital if necessary.

blondebaby111 · 22/10/2013 13:13

I feel so silly thinking about this so early on but could u just imagine!! When it's bad some roads are impassible not to mention the danger of being out in it, let's all hope for a snow free winter although any other time I'm like a big kid and live it just jot when pregnant !!

It snowed heavily the night before my ELCS and I had to be at the hospital by 7am.

Luckily the temperature was above freezing and although getting out of my road was interesting, the main roads to the hospital were fine (I drove!)

So even if it snows it doesn't mean doom!

Madratlady · 22/10/2013 13:23

I've been thinking the same! Due 17th Jan and the last few of winters have been very snowy an icy and we've recently moved to a village. The hospital is only 9 miles away though and the road through the village is fairly well used so I'm probably worrying about nothing.

Ra88 · 22/10/2013 14:14

I'm the same ! Due 21st January but May have to have a CS due to placenta previa a few weeks before , hoping for no snow!!

prissyenglisharriviste · 22/10/2013 14:16

People have babies here in Canada... Jus' sayin'....
Wink

delphi13 · 22/10/2013 15:50

People might have babies in Canada where it's snowing more regularly but when it snows in the UK the whole country shuts down. Our cars and roads just aren't made for it.

Xenadog · 22/10/2013 16:55

I've had this worry too as I'm due 16th December and have heard this is going to be the worst winter for decades. We are about 5 miles way from the hospital and providing we can get out of the village we shouldn't have a problem but I can just imagine trying to get to hospital at 4am and wheel spinning and sliding everywhere in slush, ice and snow!

blondebaby111 · 22/10/2013 16:59

I'm so pleased I'm not the only one!! If I lived in Canada prissy I wouldn't be worried! This country is crap when it comes to snow!! Shock

I have been worrying about this almost since I knew my due date. And the snow worry is combined with a Christmas/ new year - all midwives on holiday, no cabs, no public transport worry. Ho hum...

IneedAsockamnesty · 22/10/2013 17:23

Take reasonable precautions if possible

Grit your path
Near your due date leave your car on the nearest main road
Plan the safest route to the main road
Get those grip things for the bottom of your shoes (amazon about £4)
Keep your hospital bag in the car and the baby seat so you do not need to carry anything bulky.
Keep your hospital route to main roads
If you think you are in labor when you phone the hospital let them know the road situation where you are, many will then not require you to wait till your a few mins apart contraction wise if you are worried about not being able to get there.

MrsPatMustard · 22/10/2013 21:27

Yep - it's been on my mind too. I'm due 27th Jan. Live 6 miles from the hospital in a village with tiny roads that seldom get gritted. Oh and we're on a hill, which gets like an ice rink in winter.

However, on a positive note, sockpixie has provided some good advice....

Romily · 22/10/2013 21:33

Oh yes I am another one totally freaked out about the thought of snow and being in labour!

BlackholesAndRevelations · 22/10/2013 22:27

I've heard it's meant to be a terrible winter this year and I'm due in December. Good advice from sock though!

alice93 · 22/10/2013 22:33

Buy some snow chains to put on the wheels of the car if you are very paranoid, but january should be fine - it never snows at christmas, its always february/march when the snow actually comes.
if things get desperate im sure they'll always send a helicopter?!

BillStickersIsInnocent · 23/10/2013 06:12

This was me in 2009 too (due January 2010). We live in a rural area which gets blocked off when it snows. I did the same as above and:
Made sure had blankets in the car
Hospital is an hour away so when I first went into labour we called and told them the situation (it was snowing that night) so we came in a bit earlier
DH lined up to borrow a 4x4 from his boss (didn't use in the end)

The day I went into labour the boiler finally packed up and the house descended into icyness pretty quickly- I was very glad to get into a warm hospital.

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 23/10/2013 07:03

Similar story here Bill! There was snow everywhere when I went into labour. Hospital was up a windy steep hill but I was too preoccupied to worry. And frozen pipes at home made me delighted to cuddle up in a lovely cosy birth centre with running water!

I worried prior to labour but figured an ambulance would get to me if necessary. That's what they told US at our hospital visit as I think a lot of people were concerned. But it's usually possible to get short distances in bad weather so you will probably be fine - and if you can't get out and are in labour it's an emergency - so the emergency services will help you!

Plus, I loved snuggling up all cosy with a newborn at home whilst snow fell outside a few days later...

MummySparkle · 23/10/2013 07:16

That was my fear all of last year! (DS1 born jan 25th)

We live in a tiny village at the top of a hill with BT much better than a single track road to get there, and about a mile and a half from the main road, down the windy road that's a river when it's raining... Needless to say I was worried enough to let my other half buy a land rover! As it wasters was snow on the ground when DS arrived, but not too much. Thankfully e was a week late and avoided the snow!

At the bottom of our road is a small fire station. If all else failed our plan was to sledge down the road to the fire station and await help!!!

missmargot · 23/10/2013 07:30

This has been worrying me too. I'm due 4th January with the possibility of an early c section due to placenta previa. We live in a rural area and the hospital is 30 minutes drive away in good weather. All the tabloid reports of the worst winter in 100 years have not been helping my stress levels.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 23/10/2013 07:43

My dd was born in jan 2010- luckily after the massive dump of December 2009 had all but cleared up! Glad she wasn't early!!

catameringue · 23/10/2013 12:28

I fear ice and falling over!

I would say preparation for the worst can reduce fear. My list would be:
Check car tyres are inflated appropriately and have lots of tread. Replace if not. If no car, collate a list of taxi companies and local friends etc who could drive you.
Keep bottle of water, blanket and sweets in car.
Keep car filled with no less than half a tank of fuel.

Buy salt, de icer and snow shovel.

Find sturdy winter boots and put in accessible place.

Keep phone charged and a torch handy in case of power cut.
