Normal?

please dont dismiss this as normal pregnancy tuff, hear me out then tell me I'm being stupid, but please listen to me.

I've had 2 previous full term pregnancies so know what pregnancy is like. I'm 10+1 and feel wrong.

I'm completely irrational to the point where (although completely ashamed to admit it) have lost it with my children on more than one occasion and have screamed shouted and smacked them for what I realise now to be completely redicilous reasons (they're 20 months and almost 3)

When I eat carbs I feel sick, dizzy and very tired

I'm completely exhausted, I was diagnosed with CFS and then eventually Folic Acid Deficiency Aneama and since starting on the drugs have been doing really well. the pregnancy wasnt planned and I feel as tho almost over night I've been thrown back to when it was at its very very worst.

When I drink squash or eat sugars I feel dizzy and light headed. In fact I'm sat here now feeling dizzy with blurred vision feeling awful wanting to just burst into tears.

I feel down all the time, when I'm not flying off the handle I'm just 'sad' and that doent really describe it

This is how I felt at 30+ week in my last ppregnancy. DD2 was born 10lb 9oz and I was told I probably had gestational diabetes (symptoms such as sugar in urine were missed and I wasn't tested)

I had my booking in appointment with my midwife yesterday and she was completely dismissive of my concerns and told me I was being parinoid. I know it sounds stupid but I think theres a problem. I think I could have GD or theres something else going on (like the folic acid deficiency) She told me there is no way I'll be tested for GD until 20 weeks as I may not have had it last time, it was only a possibility. I cant go on like this for another 10 weeks I feel like I'm on the edge and feel like if its not something like GD maybe I should be on AD's.

I should also say during DD1's pregnancy I had Anti-natal depression, but this feels different, I cant explain it but it felt very different. Am I just kidding myself?

I know pregnancy makes you tired, sick and hormonal but I've done this twice and it just doesn't feel right. I don't know what to do so I ask you, is this normal or should I ring up and try and speak to a different midwife tomorrow?

I think you need to ditch the midwife and speak to your GP. Get pushy. Im a firm believer in knowing your own body. I have to say that I've felt similar recently, and it turned out to he anxiety. Anyway, chin up hun.x

puntasticusername · 17/10/2013 23:37

What saggy said. Listen to your instincts and at least get a second opinion before making any decisions. It sounds as if you're feeling uncomfortable with some of your own behaviour right now, and if you've recognised that, that's a red flag that something somewhere needs to change! All the best to you.

Agree, you need to push for someone to find out what is wrong. Is it worth altering your diet for a few days to see if it eases it if you follow a GD style diet plan? I mean as well as seeking medical advice, certainly not instead!

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 17/10/2013 23:41

I dont think its anxiety or mental health related, althoughb I'm not going to completely rule it out. I'm been seeing a psychotherapist regularly for 18 months and irregularly before that, but I always know when its mental health and dh is really good at picking up on it and even he says I'm not right but he doesn't know why.

I think I'll be ringing the dr tomorrow and asking for a different midwife and if not calling the EPAU and speaking to a midwife I've been dealing with up until now. I know there's something wrong. I just wish I knew what.

Rock its interesting you say about the diet, since saturday I've been following a low sugar low carb diet and have been feeling ok (apart from the ragey out bursts) but today have gone completely off plan as I ran out of some food, had nothing in for lunch so made a sandwich, had pasta for dinner and then ate cake and other crap. drank a couple of bottles of lucozade to settle my stomach because I felt sick, and today is the worst I've felt. I think thats why I'm noticing it today more and saying, there is definitely a problem

tbh id just go and see the gp. definitwly request another midwife, but deal with this directly with gp to find the cause of this. A midwife can only advise, a GP can treat or test.

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 17/10/2013 23:49

saggy my midwife said a gp couldnt do a gtt and only a referral from her could get one? shes put one in but requested I be tested at 20 weeks as she doesnt see a reason to test before then, is that not the case?

If it is GD then initially they would try to control it by putting you on a low GI diet (dr Google is v helpful for free diet plans) so if you're already noticing your diet is having an impact that would definitely be worth trying! Ask your DH to pay close attention too, my husband tends to notice changes that I don't so hopefully yours could do the same.

SaggyIsHavingAPinkKitten · 18/10/2013 05:07

I have no Idea; but as a GP would diagnose normal diabetes then id imagine its crap. But this being MN im sure someone will be along to. set me straight soon! Grin
tbh I think she sounds awful for ignoring your gut feelings. Id be demanding someone else as a MW anyway!

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 18/10/2013 08:15

Thanks everyone. I will be phoning both gp and midwife today to see what they think.

If they won't/ can't do a GTT until 20 weeks, could you request another diabetes test, the type they do for non pregnant people (I know my mom has been having tests recently with her new GP, who picked up she was borderline diabetic, and actually thinking about it, I had a pinprick test a few years ago in a LLoyds pharmacy). It could be completely useless as I imagine different types of diabetes may manifest themselves differently but might be worth asking, as it may show up something.

SaggyIsHavingAPinkKitten · 18/10/2013 10:51

Tesco pharmacy will do a pin prick test. A lot of pharmacys probably will. maybe if you get no joy itd be worth doing at some point when you are feeling ropey. Im really cross with your midwife for dismissing your fears like that! Angry

SaggyIsHavingAPinkKitten · 18/10/2013 13:47

How arw you doing today Cbeebies? have you spoken to anyone yet?

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 18/10/2013 14:16

I haven't managed to get hold of my dr surgery yet. every time I ring they are busy Halloween Hmm
But I did go to boots and get a pin prick test for myself. I took it this morning and it was slightly high (between 8 and 10) then I drank a suggery drink waited a couple of hours and took it again and it was again slightly high (although hadn't changed much from the first test)

I'm willing to accept I may be slightly paranoid but I am feeling alot better today than I was yesterday. I'm going to keep trying to get hold of the dr and see what they say.

I definitely wont tell you you are being stupid! if something doesnt feel right then generally it isnt... go to your GP if your MW wont listen. Insist on getting a blood test for GD, and FA deficiency...are you on high dose FA? if not i would think you should be. I had FA deficiency before i got preg with DD and i was put on high dose (5mg) for the entirity of the pregnancy.
