Hi guys I'm finally off on my honeymoon with my husband next month. We are going to the Maldives so that's about a 11 hour flight total.
Dose anyone have any recommendations on flying that distance. Or any experience? I've heard walk around every hour for a few min, drink plenty of water throughout flight and wear the special circulation socks. is that about it?

I flew to the USA at 15 weeks and flew home at 24 weeks. I was fine but careful when on the flight.

I made sure to tell the cabin crew who advised I lie down for no loner than an hour and to walk around the plane, wear flight socks and drink PLENTY of water and fluids.

My friend was told to take a baby aspirin, I didn't and I would check with the doctor to see if this is advisable.

I also had a massage the day before I left the USA which I found really helped ease any swelling I had.

Have a wonderful honeymoon :)

Hi Op

I flew 11 hours to Seychells and back about two/three weeks ago and I was 26 weeks then.

Just check with your insurer that they will cover all pregnancy related illnesses and complications. Not all travel insurers cover pregnancy.

I'm flying to the US next week-11 hour flight too and will be 19 weeks and back again at 21 weeks. I'm planning on the same-flight socks, lots of water and lots of trips to the loo!

I flew to Bali (about 12 hours to Singapore then a couple more to Bali if I remember right) a few of weeks ago at ago at about 22 weeks. Was fine. I got some compression stockings from dr on prescription due to bad varicose veins and checked with insurer but apart from that did nothing different to usual (apart from not having the free booze!! :( )

Just relax and have a good holiday, it will be fine

If you check in at the desk, let the assistant know you are pregnant and ask if you can get a bulkhead seat or, if the plane isn't full, whether you can have a row of 3 between the two of you so you can put your feet up (assuming you aren't flying business or 1st class with fly beds already). I did this for flights to Mauritius at 16 weeks pg and the check in desk in London were brilliant. It makes such a difference if you can keep your feet elevated as you can have a proper sleep without worrying.

I went to the Maldives at 17 weeks, it was great! I loved being able to nap whenever I wanted and just move between sun lounger, sea and bed. The flight was fine although the flight socks hurt as they got really tight, apart from that I didn't feel any different to normal. And my consultant told me there is a great hospital on the main island which made me happier as you do feel isolated there (I'm sure you won't need it). Beware boat trips though, my ms had been over for 3 weeks and I'm normally fine on boats but I went out on the dive boat one day and was very sick :(

An exit row seat is another option, although I'm not sure they will give them to pregnant women. Which I think is a bit silly as at 22 weeks I'd be far more capable of operating the emergency exit if needed than the OAPs who are usually sat in those seats!

ProbablyJustGas · 17/10/2013 13:20

I don't think they do give exit row seats to pregnant women. Flying at 18 weeks should be fine - I flew to USA and back with a layover in Germany at around 20-24 weeks.

Definitely bring flight socks! I didn't and my ankles were doughnuts the morning after landing in America. Lovely.

Yes you can't have an exit row seat but there are extra leg room seats where they have the spaces for the cot and I'd recommend those :)
