Same MW everytime or not?

Hello. As the title suggests, I'm curious to see if it's fairly normal to be seen by a different midwife at every appointment, or if any of you ladies have been seen by the same midwife all the way along? Has seeing several different MWs given you any difficulties?

I have a named midwife (same for both pregnancies) and only see someone else if she is on holiday. However there is little chance she will be with me at the birth (as cannot request a home birth) when birth centre staff take over. Some places operate in teams - you see a number of different midwives but one of them will be there when you labour - maybe this is the case in your area?

I've mostly seen the same community midwife, except for times she's been on leave or sick.

She won't be there for birth though - I'll be seen by whoever at the hospital.

Once we're home, my community midwife will be one of a team who visits us there, so there is an element on continuity.

I had that rare beast, community caseload midwives. That means the same midwives - a group of three in my case - all through pregnancy, birth (home or hospital), and afterwards. I was very lucky.

I've seen a different midwife every time, they've all been perfectly lovely and I've nothing to complain about. I was just hoping to be able to form a bond with one midwife, a little idealistic perhaps?! Maybe that is the case in my area Niggle, I was starting to wonder if it was because I'm military and my antenatal care is handled by the local clinic even though I'm not registered there.

I have a named community mw who I see all the time during pregnancy and when they visit at home after the birth.

I'm 34 weeks now and have only seen a different mw once when mine was on holiday.

For the actual birth it will be whoever is at the hospital as I don't want a homebirth.

From hearing other people's experiences I'm very lucky!

I have never saw the same midwife twice. I'm diabetic so under consultant care and as a result only see the midwife at the hospital, never been to the midwife at my gp surgery, and there's a team of about 6 who just take the next available woman. They're all perfectly nice but some I prefer more than others, and one especially I always keep my fingers crossed will see me as she was lovely. My care hasn't suffered as a result but I do wish I could see the same one or two everytime so i could at least learn their name! When it comes to labour I will just see whoever is on duty.

Same one except when she was on holiday. Community midwife who I see at my doctors surgery. She is lovely but it's not until reading some of the stories on here that I realised how lucky I am. Though for labour it will be whoever is on shift at the hospital.

Different one every time so far - I'm 21 weeks. I don't mind as I have a doula lined up, but I do wish I had a way to contact any of them.

Quodlibet · 16/10/2013 10:14

Different one every time here too - 31 weeks.
