Hi - I'm 7 weeks pregnant today and gave booked an early scan on Friday just for reassurance. I'm currently off work with hyperemesis gravidarum so needed a pick-me-up and a reminder of why I'm going through this! I know I won't see much and I'm quite scared of a mmc, so I'm just interested in other people's experiences with an early scan, and if all turned out well.

Thank you x

I think at that stage we saw a heartbeat. We had a few early scans due to bleeding as well as previous mc's so the first one we didn't see anything but the sac but that was around 4-5 weeks.
But don't be scared if u don't see much. I couldn't believe the difference from then to the 12 weeks one! Its amazing how quickly they change and grow x

MellowandFruitfulSnazzy · 09/10/2013 11:24

Got a heartbeat but didn't see anything at all at 6 weeks. All fine after that, baby progressed well and is in excellent health. Hope all goes well for you and congrats!

Sammie101 · 09/10/2013 11:25

I had a scan at 5 weeks 3 days and we were able to see the heartbeat. The lady who did it said you normally see the heartbeat at 5 weeks 4 days so not to worry if it wasn't there. The fact that it was there was kind of like a sign for me that I was going to keep the baby because at the time I was shocked and unsure what to do. Now I have a beautiful little girl who is nearly 10 weeks old and it was worth every second Smile

I didn't have hyperemesis though but my best friend did and I know how hard it was for her. Have a big hug from me and I really hope it gets better, congratulations on your pregnancy Smile

I had a scan at 7 weeks and 2 days. I wasn't worried about anything as such but me and hubby were just excited and wanted to see what was in there. It turned out to be an elongated circle type shape with a flickering heart beat. In hindsight it wasn't very exciting but at the time it meant EVERYTHING to us and we were super duper excited!!!

I then had another scan about 3 weeks later due to bleeding I'd been having and the difference was amazing!! Very obvious head, arms and legs, it was brilliant. 10 days later I had my 12 week scan and me and husband were absolutely overwhelmed by how much things had changed in just those 10 days - it was a real baby!! Smile

I'm 16 weeks now and we have anther private scan booked on Friday to find out the sex. We are so excited!!

Congratulations on your pregnancy x x

greentshirt · 09/10/2013 11:30

I had one at 6+3 and just saw a blob and a heartbeat flickering away. Another one at 9+4 and it was a lot more baby like, could see moving arms and legs and beginning of bowels and face.
At 12+5 was much more baby like, huge leaps between all those 3 week intervals!

Ah brilliant thank you so much for the responses. DH is really excited but I feel quite reserved because I just hope all is well and that it sticks! Congratulations on your pregnancies and babies!

Sorry to catch this so late!

I had a few scans due to early spotting. 5 weeks we saw yolk sac, 6 weeks we saw a good heartbeat and at 9 weeks we saw our little peanut! It's my 12 week scan next week.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and make sure you ask for scan pictures, even if there's not much to see yet. I'm glad I did Smile xx

Shellywelly1973 · 10/10/2013 09:08

I had a private scan st 7 wk & 2 days. I could see the heart beat. It was very reassuring.

Good luck. Hope everything works out for you.

tryingtokeeppositive · 10/10/2013 09:27

Thank you all, fingers tightly crossed for Friday x

Yes, at about 6+3. We saw a little, flickery heartbeat inside a tiny beany :) Now 20 weeks.

PinkParsnips · 10/10/2013 10:45

Had scans at pretty much the same intervals as greenshirt and saw the same, the difference between 9+2 and 12 weeks was amazing!

At 6 weeks it was definitely just a little flickering blob but the best blob I've ever seen!

Good luck

GreatJoanUmber · 10/10/2013 14:23

Had a dating scan at 7+1 and saw a baby-blob and the heartbeat :) Now 27 weeks and all well so far!
Good luck, at this stage you should be able to see the HB which makes your risk for m/c drop dramatically :)

bludgerwitch · 10/10/2013 23:25

I had an early scan this week at about 6/6+1 and it is reassuring to know that all is there, yolk sack and space bubble and all. Have to go back in two weeks time, though, as it really was too early to see baby properly.

EeyoreIsh · 10/10/2013 23:34

I've had two sets of early scans. The first pregnancy at seven weeks I had at heartbeat, but five days later I'd miscarried. The second pregnancy had a heartbeat and now 23 weeks.

As I learnt from experience, a positive early scan only shows that there is a viable pregnancy then. By 12 weeks the chances of the pregnancy being viable are substantially higher.

I wouldn't have an early scan again unless something was wrong, as I found coping with the falsely raised hopes awful, and the reassurance offered by the healthy scan in the second pregnancy wasn't significant.

I hope your HG gets better soon Flowers

BettyBi0 · 11/10/2013 18:17

Hope the scan gives you the reassurance you need. Something to bear in mind when being scanned so early is that all the measurements are super tiny so take them with a pinch of salt.

One mm one way or the other or a couple of pixels on the sonographer's screen can make your baby seem abnormally big/small for dates which can cause a lot of unnecessary worry. I had lots of early scans and was repeatedly told that my baby was small for dates which had me so worried that it wasn't going to thrive. Everything turned out great in the end though and by 12 weeks the baby was absolutely average.

If I had the time over I don't think I'd have had so many early private scans as they never gave me the reassurance I needed and they wouldn't have changed the outcome anyway. Easier said than done though!

BalloonSlayer · 11/10/2013 18:23

I saw an ovalish blob of grey staticky fuzz. A small area of the grey fuzz sort of sparkled or flickered. That was the heartbeat. He is now watching the Simpsons. Smile

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 11/10/2013 18:24

I've had two of these - one at 7+5 (DD1, all fine) due to slight bleeding, one at 9 weeks (DC2 due in three weeks) as I now live in the US and it's standard to do them any time from 6 weeks here. They don't like to do them before as it may not be possible to see a heartbeat as it's too early, but that then gives the impression that there's something wrong.

Both times, I have pictures of what looks like a little fried egg. That's compared with the 12 week pictures, where you can see a whole little body. It's amazing really.

Most scans before 12 weeks will be internal - not painful but a tad uncomfortable with DD1, not painful at all with DC2 as I guess everything had been stretched by giving birth to DD1.

Good luck.

DaleyBump · 11/10/2013 18:32

I had a scan at 6+3 and we saw a greyish blob and a wee flickering heartbeat. It wasn't an internal, it was perfectly clear from an abdominal scan. Now 32+6 and my little boy is due on the 30th of November :) hope today went well for you Flowers

tryingtokeeppositive · 12/10/2013 12:22

Just thought I'd pop back. The scan yesterday was good, a nice strong heartbeat externally and internally, and all seemed well. Is true what another poster has said though, it hasn't given me the reassurance I need for some reason. DH is really happy, but I feel like I'm just waiting for the bad news. I have PCOS and she looked at my ovaries yesterday too and they are particularly bad. I'm scared of a mmc more than anything, so perhaps I'll have another at 10 weeks as I don't think I could wait until 12! Thank you for your kind words and sharing your experiences... And I thought getting pregnant was the hard part. The stress is well and truly on!

OP posts:
Julietee · 12/10/2013 14:27

Just out of interest, would the current state of your ovaries affect an embryo that's already implanted?

tryingtokeeppositive · 12/10/2013 19:47

I hope not, no, but it was just a little discouraging to see. Last time they did one there were none, and I thought I was 'beating it' iyswim.

OP posts:
Mellowandfruitful · 12/10/2013 21:23

But it's all so unpredictable OP so I would really try not to worry about the PCOS situation. Just hang on. Fingers crossed for you.
