Hi all
As the title says, I found out 2 weeks that I'm pregnant and am 6 weeks atm. I'm 19 so I haven't got any mummy friends to ask :( I've just recently got the nausea (not much actual sickness though) and I'm ridiculously tired!
Something that's worrying me is my diet. I don't want to eat anything due to the nausea but I know I need to. Does anyone have any sickness remedies that worked for them?
I'm also wondering about buying stuff..the pram me and my OH want has got £125 off atm but don't want to buy it in case I jinx anything. When did you all start buying?
Thankyou :)

Congratulations Smile

Ginger biscuits (I preferred the Tesco Special ones with chocolate) for nausea. Ginger is meant to be good for nausea.

As far as getting stuff in, I know it's REALLY exciting, but all this stuff we want to buy... if you can, borrow it. Firstly, you have to store it all somewhere. Secondly, they grow out if it and you can give it back.

Borrow a Moses basket (it gets used for about 6 weeks). You are going to meet LOADS of people who will recommend and have an opinion on absolutely EVERYTHING. Take your time. A good pram is important, so research it well. And make sure you can fit it in your car if you have one, without having to take the wheels off.

Thankyou ohforfoxsake :)
I heard ginger was good but I don't like it :P though I'm willing to try anything atm!
I've got my mum to tell me what I absolutely need and what's going to be a waste of money..we've got rough prices for everything so we're well prepared! I've got the measurements of the pram when it's folded, just need to measure the boot of the car to see if it'll fit!

I managed to escape the horrors of ms, good job because I'm a total wuss! One of my really good friends suffered pretty bad but swore by dry Cheerios cereal, especially before she got out of bed. Really hope it helps and congratulations Smile .

bootheunicorn · 08/10/2013 18:49

I didn't get it for a while and thought I'd skipped it..but it arrived on the morning of my 6th week mark :( ooh, I haven't heard about trying dry cereal, I've been recommended dry plain biscuits in the morning, like rich tea.
Thankyou :)

Just eat what you fancy and when, and take some vitamins and folic acid. It's more importent that you stay as hydrated as possible and get a little food in while you're feeling sick than trying to force yourself to eat huge meals. To put your mind at rest a bit my body effectively starved itself because of hyperemesis (very bad sickness) for 16 weeks, lost 2 stone and was hospitalised 3 times, now although it was horrible I am now 32 weeks and a bit, baby is on the bigger side of average and has no obvious problems at all. Oh, and i feel alright too. The baby is a parasite inside you, it will take everything it needs from your body before you get a chance to use it.
So don't feel bad if you can keep down some chips but not a salad, don't eat anything that's a low fat version as you'll need those calories and fats for growing baby.
Congratulations and good luck!

RaspberrysAndIcecream · 08/10/2013 19:50

First: Congratulations!!

I had nausea from about 6 wks, also not actually sick but just felt crappy!!! And so so tired.

My midwife told me to eat whatever I fancied to get through the first bit and then when I started feeling a bit better, to then concentrate on eating properly.

So I picked at stuff, try digestives and rich tea if your not keen on ginger (I'm not either) I also ate toast.

The other thing that I found, and I swear by this for me (tho my friend said no way) is that I ate something about 10mins before getting out of bed in the morning and within about 10mins of waking up. My thing was a small bowl of coco pops with a little milk!! Grin Blush

I'm 16 weeks now and beginning to feel a bit more normal, but still knackered!
Don't worry about offers - they always have offered on stuff, and a pram is an essential part of equipment, don't rush into it so that you can try it all out and make sure it's the right one for u.

HadALittleFaith · 08/10/2013 20:00

To survive pregnancy and impending motherhood, let me let you into a little secret No-one knows what they're doing. We all make it up as we go along!. Grin

Yes try to eat but frankly in the first trinester it may just be about getting down what you can. I found I could eat if I had an ice lolly first.

I would recommend the What to expect when you're expecting app, really informative without too much info. As books go, the rough guide to pregnancy and birth is both informative and hilarious!

I only started buying after my 12 weeks scan and didn't get the travel system (pushchair) til I was 24 weeks. I'd recommend going to somewhere like Kiddicare to look at stuff. They let us play around with two travel system for 30 minutes before I chose!

Have a look in ante-natal clubs on here and find the group due the same month as you. It's really reassuring to have other people at the same stage as you to chat to! My baby is 6 months old and I still talk to my group daily. I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly.

HowlerMonkey · 08/10/2013 20:07

When I first got pregnant I actually went to a bookshop and scoured the shelves for a book that I thought MUST exist:

'So, you're pregnant. You must be terrified.'

I was astonished to find it didn't because that is how I felt at the time.

Maybe I should write it Wink

You will be fine. We all think we'll be dreadful but the vast majority are fine. And if you do struggle (I have) there are safety nets in place to help, not interfere.

Maybe get some naice card from Hobbycraft and make your own 'IT WILL ALL BE FINE' poster and put it on your wall, for a start. Seeing is believing!

Also get some prenatal vitamins. And I found that 7-up free is good for nausea because it's fizzy, plus it is caffeine-free and sugar-free. Possibly also taste-free, but we'll let that go.

I found that I had to eat SOMETHING (anything) as soon as I woke up or I'd be sick within 10 minutes. Digestives worked well, just one or two.

Also, I'd recommend the second-hand route for clothes, at least in terms of basics such as onesies. Have a few naice outfits just in case but don't break the bank. Mine lived in onesies until they were 6mo, can you tell?!

WannaBeAMommy · 09/10/2013 12:45

Congratulations BootheunicornGrin

I had shocking nausea ans sickness from 6 weeks til 14 weeks. Im 15 weeks now with flu so maybe its giving me a break. Although I was nauseas I forced myself to eat but I had to lie down after it until it settled. If I ate then had to go anywhere i was screwed id puke it. No matter what happens the baby will rob everything from the food as soon as you eat it. It will be you that suffers.

If you are feeling sick and cant keep water down my midwife suggested sucking ice. It really works as its gradually getting in rather than a gulp of water.
I heard about ginger nuts like them just didnt feel like them. For me tuc crackers worked for me as the crackers soothed the sickness and made me thirsty coz of the saltWink

I waited until after the three month scan for buying stuff. Everything is so expensive so were buying weekly stocking up on nappies etc. Everyone givs you clothes but it'll be 0-3 3-6. It mighy be wise to pick up newborns. You could wait til the january sales for shopping. Thats my plan anyway. Babys due in april so i think thats enty of time.

Sorry this has turned into a rantGrin

LightTripper · 09/10/2013 18:32

Just to back up the other advice. For me eating something at least every hour stops me actually throwing up ( though still feel rubbish). Loads of sleep too. 8-10 hours if you can. If I get less ( or if I work too hard/long) it gets noticeably worse. Lying down helps. Physical activity (even walking to the shop or bus stop) needs to be timed for reasonably soon after food. I also find boiled sweets help between food (Tesco have a really good selection. I like the pear drops).

Things I can eat include biscuits, grapes, banana, toast, porridge, cheddar, granola bars, sweetcorn, peas. Occasionally I have managed pizza or (weirdly) mild curry with rice.

Not that balanced but as others have said in the first trimester everything the baby needs except folic acid the baby will just take from your body. So try not to worry!

TheABC · 09/10/2013 18:55

Congratulations! I found out that ginger ale, plus travel sickness bands got me through the worst of the first three months. But it does vary from one person to the next, so just keep experimenting and I will keep my fingers crossed that you will find a solution soon. If it's any consolation, the midwife told me that morning sickness was a good sign everything was going well.

Make a list of everything you think you will need (or just want) and keep it by you when relatives ask about gifts. You may get contributions (or gifts) for all the major items this way. And as another poster said, consider borrowing or buying second hand - especially clothes! My DS rarely wears the same item of clothing for more than a few weeks and many of the boys bundles we bought off eBay had unworn clothes with the labels still attached.

Enjoy the pregnancy; especially the long, snoozy lie-ins!

Anothermrssmith · 09/10/2013 21:41

Congratulations bootheunicorn!

I had morning sickness from 8-22 weeks, still get the odd bout now at 25 weeks though thankfully it tends to be a case of feel sick, throw up once and all good! I found yogurts helped, apparently because they're milky they're pretty soothing for the stomach (something like that anyway!) Despite being 28 and not having had them since I was about 4 I was drawn like a magnet to petit filous and they're actually the only yogurts I'll eat now, they still taste amazing. I know you said you aren't keen on ginger but along with the yogurts I drank ginger and lemon tea, it's not a really strong flavour and the lemon helps lift it a bit as well so that may be worth a try as well.

I was about 14 weeks before I bought anything, a cot that was on sale and saved us about £200 compared to buying full price. Wait until the sales are on about Christmas time and see what you can pick up then and save a bit of cash, easier said than done I know! But that said, what will happen will happen and buying a pram at 6 weeks wont jinx anything. Even though none of your friends have kids you'll be amazed at what you'll get offered from people, we're getting things from friends of our parents who have had baby stuff tucked away for the last 20 odd years but is still in perfect condition! Also getting a swing crib (rather than a moses basket) from MY nana (age 80!) who bought it for my brother when he was born in '83, all 6 of her grandkids used it and now her first great grandchild will get to use it too, shes thrilled to see it going to the next generation. The only thing I would never use second hand is a car seat, even if it comes from a friend you just don't know that it's in 100% tip-top condition.

And don't worry, no one knows what they're doing, my theory is you only need to know three things. Feed it, change it, do your best not to kill it! But then this is my first too so what do I know?

bootheunicorn · 10/10/2013 14:15

Thankyou for all your advice everyone! I love the idea of using tuc biscuits to settle my tummy as I love those! My sickness is getting worse, there's been no let up today.
I'm hoping it'll ease off soon, I'm trying to complete my A Levels at college, got this year left but I'm having a lot of time off atm due to the sickness and I'm scared they're gonna kick me off because my attendance is bad. My first midwife appointment is a week on Monday so she might be able to help.
Thanks again :)

I bought one of those ice lolly makers and make smoothie lollies. It was the only thing I could stomach for 4 months. That and Skittles lol.

I got morning sickness in the evening from not eating enough. Make sure that your blood sugar doesn't go too low. Eat alot!

bootheunicorn · 11/10/2013 19:04

My due date is the 31st May so it is around exam time but I want to carry on as long as possible. I've been in every day this week but haven't managed a full day due to the sickness.
