What to ask at my first GP appointment?

Hi All.

I'm about 6 weeks and have my first GP appointment tomorrow morning. I have a few ideas about what to ask; what should I be doing/not doing, how will I be assigned a midwife, when can I get a scan of some sort, how long do I have to choose a hospital and which can I choose, etc. But can anyone help me with the less obvious questions one should ask upfront?

He is generally laissez-faire, and though that is cool in some ways, I don't want to miss any key deadlines or opportunities or pointers because of his chillaxed attitude!

Thank you!

Mine just asked whether i was happy about the pregnancy, congratulated me and sent me off to the desk to ask for a midwife appointment.

As paper clip said, GPs main concern is if your continuing with pregnancy. Save up all of your questions for midwife x

I never spoke to a doctor. I was just booked in with the midwife at 8 weeks and she sorted everything.

I don't think it is necessary to see a doctor, and you would probably be better reading stuff on here for advice on what to do / not do to be honest.

Thank you, collected voices of experience! I'll eagerly await meeting the midwife.

I wouldn't get too excited by that either ;-) sorry - not raining on your parade but i was expecting loads from first midwife appointments but the reality is you fill in some paperwork and wee in a pot. The exciting stuff is chatting about the baby with friends and family.

Congratulations on your pregnancy - I'm chuffed for you I'm excited for all new babies, I'm broody as anything just think, in a few months you'll have a gorgeous squishy lump to gaze at x

Pretty much what everyone else said. Mine actually asked why I'd come to see her!

An thank you paperclips, thus far it's been a good ride, hopefully it continues that way and I'll try and keep my expectations in check!

Hi Op,

Congratulations Flowers

Try not to expect too much from your booking in appointment with MW. All she will do is fill in a load of forms about medical history, probably take some bloods. She will probably tell you about hw scan will be booked. The appointment will probably last about 10/15 mins which is whatbit was for me. I thought it would be a really informative appointment and i was really excited to see mybMW but disappointingly it was a little like stepping on a treadmill.

Congrats!

I saw my GP for 5 minutes. Went in, he asked me what he could help me with so I said I was pregnant. Then all he did was say congratulations and put in some details (like dates last period) and referred me to the local maternity services. He also looked at a chart and told me my estimated due date.

I then got a letter a couple of weeks later to invite me for booking appointment (although by that point we had moved to a different area so I self-referred to the maternity ward in the new area).

They don't even double check if you're pregnant (no blood test or anything) - they just take your word for it.
