What to ask at my first GP appointment?

Hi All.

I'm about 6 weeks and have my first GP appointment tomorrow morning. I have a few ideas about what to ask; what should I be doing/not doing, how will I be assigned a midwife, when can I get a scan of some sort, how long do I have to choose a hospital and which can I choose, etc. But can anyone help me with the less obvious questions one should ask upfront?

He is generally laissez-faire, and though that is cool in some ways, I don't want to miss any key deadlines or opportunities or pointers because of his chillaxed attitude!

Mine just asked whether i was happy about the pregnancy, congratulated me and sent me off to the desk to ask for a midwife appointment.

As paper clip said, GPs main concern is if your continuing with pregnancy. Save up all of your questions for midwife x

I never spoke to a doctor. I was just booked in with the midwife at 8 weeks and she sorted everything.

I don't think it is necessary to see a doctor, and you would probably be better reading stuff on here for advice on what to do / not do to be honest.

I wouldn't get too excited by that either ;-) sorry - not raining on your parade but i was expecting loads from first midwife appointments but the reality is you fill in some paperwork and wee in a pot. The exciting stuff is chatting about the baby with friends and family.

Congratulations on your pregnancy - I'm chuffed for you I'm excited for all new babies, I'm broody as anything just think, in a few months you'll have a gorgeous squishy lump to gaze at x

Try not to expect too much from your booking in appointment with MW. All she will do is fill in a load of forms about medical history, probably take some bloods. She will probably tell you about hw scan will be booked. The appointment will probably last about 10/15 mins which is whatbit was for me. I thought it would be a really informative appointment and i was really excited to see mybMW but disappointingly it was a little like stepping on a treadmill.

Congrats!

I saw my GP for 5 minutes. Went in, he asked me what he could help me with so I said I was pregnant. Then all he did was say congratulations and put in some details (like dates last period) and referred me to the local maternity services. He also looked at a chart and told me my estimated due date.

I then got a letter a couple of weeks later to invite me for booking appointment (although by that point we had moved to a different area so I self-referred to the maternity ward in the new area).

They don't even double check if you're pregnant (no blood test or anything) - they just take your word for it.
