Do you use first morning urine for your midwife appointments?

At 25 weeks the midwife said I had +1 glucose in my urine, but not to worry as that is pretty low and could be down to something I'd eaten. She said they would check again next time. At 28 weeks (with new midwife) it was +4 and the midwife seemed to think maybe it was because I had eaten a bananna about 4 hours before providing the urine specemin. She made it sound as if I should have brought a first morning urine sample to the appointment, but no one had specified previously that it had to be done at any particular time of day.

Just wondering if you do your sample first thing, or just whatever time depending on when your appointment is? Should this make a difference to the level of glucose in the urine and does anyone know if +4 is high or not?

Thanks

I do mine on the way in to see the midwife - don't want to be carrying a pot of it around, can guarantee I'd spill it in my handbag Grin

Third pregnancy and never had an issue doing it that way.

stargirl1701 · 07/10/2013 20:51

I did after I gave one sample 20 minutes after eating a chocolate brownie. It came back with glucose in it and I was sent for fasting testing. I was fine.

40WeekWait · 07/10/2013 20:54

I now give first morning urine after I nearly ended up with a glucose tolerance test because I'd been eating cake before an appointment!

SnoopySnoopyDoggDogg · 07/10/2013 22:03

I did with both of mine, was worried I wouldn't need a wee when I got to the surgery otherwise Blush

Was a bit gross having a little pot of pee hidden in my bag all morning though.

MaryPoppinsBag · 07/10/2013 23:13

Yes I did mostly.
Come to think of it I remember going for an appointment and doing mu sample after eating fruit cake and the midwife said ooh what have you been eating. Wondered what she meant. Now I know.

ZenNudist · 07/10/2013 23:16

I always use first morning urine as that's what I'm told to do. Appointment usually first thing & it's most practical to do first thing.

Stick the pot out by the loo the night before.

midwifeandmum · 07/10/2013 23:18

If ur app is early in morning then use ur first morning urine but prefer 'fresh' samples for afternoon app. Just watch what ur eating beforehand, u don't want to end up with an unnecessary glucose tolerance test. Lucozade, irnbru cola chocolate etc before u do ur sample is a no no.

Plus u dont want to walk around with a big pot of pee swooshing around ur bag all day lol

princesscupcakemummyb · 07/10/2013 23:28

i just do the sample about 20 mins before appointment but i make sure i dont drink anything major for a hour leading up to that

elcranko · 07/10/2013 23:58

I used to take FMU samples but that was because my MW appointments were always first thing. It wouldn't have occurred to me to watch what I ate/drank beforehand but I'll remember this now for in the future! Smile

FraggleRock77 · 08/10/2013 00:02

Good info. I didn't think of this at all. Will take a morning sample from now on Smile

SadPander · 08/10/2013 20:26

Thanks for all your replies. I thought the idea of carrying a pot of wee around in my handbag all day a little weird too, and thought it ws better fresh! The midwife only does appointments in the afternoon so I've generally eaten something by the time I do the sample, but I don't have a generally sugary diet. The first time they put it down to cereal and the second to a bananna.

I've got to take FMU in tomorrow so they can check for glucose - but surely if I haven't eaten for 12 hours then there wont be any glucose in my system anyway?! I thought that the midday sample I usually do would be a better indication of how my body is coping with sugar, but I don't really know alot about it. Fingers crossed its clear, not sure I can cope with 11 weeks without sugar!

This wouldn't have occurred to me either - thanks for the tip. And to think I nearly downed a can of Ting before my last appointment!

Hope all is well with tomorrow's GTT.

Shellywelly1973 · 08/10/2013 22:40

Im on my 7th pregnancy & I've never been told this!

MrsMuskett · 09/10/2013 07:35

Always morning wee, best one of the day to test.if u don't want it leaking if u av to carry it around just put it in a plastic bag,my midwife supplies one for me but a sandwich/freezer bag etc will do xx

Good point OP! The one time I didn't take a urine sample first thing in the morning, the midwife found a trace of glucose in my urine (I had had sugary tea and some brioche for breakfast about an hour earlier). Whenever I take it first thing in the morning, everything is fine.

apperleydapperley · 09/10/2013 09:40

I was also sent for a GTT after eating an orange just before doing a sample for a routine appointment. I don't know why they don't warn you of this as I'm sure it would save a lot of resources and time on unnecessary fasting tests.

mycatlikestwiglets · 09/10/2013 09:48

My mw told me there was no need to use FMU but to use one soon after (not a problem given ability to wee on demand during this pregnancy!)

SadPander · 10/10/2013 10:02

Well the midwife asked me to get the phlibotomist to dip the urine, but she wouldnt, so the nurse was supposed to do it, but she sent it to the lab, so none the wiser as to if there was glucose in in! Text the midwife twice and she is ignoring me - Love my doctors surgery!

If I did have gestational diabetes would glucose show up in the urine anyway given that I hadn't eaten for 12 hours before doing the sample? I'm a bit worried it might come back okay but be misleading and that I will be doing harm to the baby if it goes undiagnosed. Should I maybe switch to a low sugar/gi diet anyway to be on the safe side?

I had to see the diabetes specialist midwife yesterday after a positive GTT.

I mentioned not having had any glucose in my urine in this pregnancy, and she said it's a pretty poor indicator of GD.

I also then mentioned having once had +glucose in my urine during my pregnancy with my DS1, but that the midwife had told me it was the sugar puffs I'd eaten. She told me that she wishes MW would stop saying this as it's rubbish, and that in a normal person, there should never be glucose in the urine, and that it is almost always caused by there being too much glucose in the urine, and therefore some kind of issue with insulin - so either being borderline insulin resistant, or actually having GD.

She said that she was trying to train all the MW in my area to send ladies for a GTT as soon as they picked up any glucose in the urine, due to the increased risks with GD or even being insulin resistant, as it is pretty much always a sign of abnormality, and then she can keep a much closer eye on the ladies and sort out diet advice etc before it gets out of hand.

She also said it should not be a FMU sample as it defeats the point of them dipping for glucose!

SadPander · 11/10/2013 16:58

Thanks Pinapple that's really helpful.

Got the results of the FMU back today and there was still a trace - midwife asked me to contact her if there was any glucose at all so I've left her an answerphone message but had no responce (still no responce from my previous 2 texts asking her to check the results for me either). Don't want to leave it till my next appointment in 2 weeks as she said herself this would be too long to wait - but who can I contact instead if she carries on ignoring me?

Not sure what to do, thinking maybe I should adjust my diet just incase, but what should I be eating - Low GI? If anyone can help I'd be very grateful!

This is really odd as round here the first thing the midwives say when you turn up is hello, pass sample bottle then ask you to go to the bathroom! So I've never used FMU.

ILiveInAPineappleCoveredInSnow · 11/10/2013 23:03

Yes, just eat low gi. Seeded bread, brown rice etc, you know the usual stuff that's good for you Grin
