Have been sorting through my son's baby stuff today, getting them all washed and refreshed for current bump and have come across a big stack of muslin squares. I never used them with my son but always hear people saying how amazing they are and a definite essential so I'm wondering what does everyone use them for?? Are they to use as burp cloths? I probably sound very stupid asking this question lol

I use mine when i cant find a bib, and to mop up the sick Grin

Timpani · 05/10/2013 19:51

I used them to mop up milk dribble, puke, leaky nipple on the other side, to put under baby's head in the Moses to save sheets. Everything!

I hardly used them with DS1. He didn't dribble, never had a leaky nappy, hardly ever was sick, never let a drop of milk leave his mouth - he was a seriously tidy baby! DS2 dribbles like nothing on earth, brought milk up after every feed for the first 5 months, leaky nappies for the first 2 months .... those muslin squares have been indispensable second time round!

Good luck with your new arrival. Smile

One of the great things about them is they are easy to dry...therefore much better to use than a towel .

Mumbledore · 05/10/2013 20:00

In addition to all the wiping I have also used them for emergency changing mat and emergency blanket. I love them!

noblegiraffe · 05/10/2013 20:01

If you have a sicky baby you use them to cover your house, your baby and yourself.

They can also be used to sit or lay on, as a buggy sunshade, impromptu hat, bib (still wrap one around my 4 year old when eating an ice cream).

C0smos · 05/10/2013 20:07

All of the above, it's not unusual for me to get through about 6 a day

plentyofsoap · 05/10/2013 20:18

They are the best item I purchased and I used them right up until he was a toddler. I will be buying lots again this time.

stella69x · 05/10/2013 20:26

Also make great straining cloths for stock and ironing cloths to stop trousers going shiny.

TruJay · 05/10/2013 20:27

Brilliant, thank u everyone. I just bought them when having my son and just never used them but with these suggestions I think it seems best to always have a couple in the changing bag then, thanks ladies! 36 weeks today so I'll get to use them soon enough

Their catchphrase should be - "muslins - if you need them, you'll know" :o
DS definitely needed them.
I would also like to nominate them as "thing that looks most different after first wash"!

Andanotherthing123 · 05/10/2013 20:41

DS1 had chronic reflux, to the point where I had to take out 3 changes of clothes for him, at least 2 spare tops for me and 10 plus muslins to get us through being out of the house for 3 hours. he used to bring up so much milk that I frequently had a wet bra and pants and had to change my whole outfit!!

If DC3 has the same capacity to vomit milk for the first 6 months, I've vowed to use plastic sheets and large bath towels instead. I know this isn't really what you're asking but I just wanted to get it off my chest!!

LamaDrama · 05/10/2013 20:47

I use one on the baby changing mat, its not so cold then & If DD does a wee in the middle of changing, I just wash it.

Also tuck one in bra strap to cover my boob when feeding.

I used large ones as swaddles, playmats at other people's houses (even on their mats, as DS has an unbreakable interest in eating any dust/crumb bits he comes across), lining the pram and car seat in case of accidents, covering me up when feeding in a public place in the early days, covering him up when he got very distracted when feeding after four months, draping over the pram or sling when he was asleep and it was sunny, as bedding when we were on a plane or at friends' houses (in the early days, sometimes spent a night sleeping on it first so that it smelt of me and he would settle).
