Or flu? Just feel odd about getting injected with a virus with my 33 week old baby inside me. Don't know why as pro immunisation etc but just feel a bit odd about this. Reassure me please!

there was a thread on this a few days ago think its just down to own personal choice. i would recommend you research it a bit urself try not to be swayed by others opinions

TarkaTheOtter · 02/10/2013 21:34

I've booked to have both. With the wc one you need to have the virus whilst the baby is in you so it gets the protection because of babies getting wc before the first set of infant vaccinations. With the flu one, I think it's more for your benefit because flu can be more serious when you are pregnant, so I suppose that's a harder call for some people.
Think they are inactive in both cases though so it's not like being injected with a live virus.

It is weird (I shuddered when I walked out of the surgery after having both done at the same time) but very important for both yours and baby's health. It is completely your decision though, there is plenty of info out there! Smile

Chilli81 · 02/10/2013 21:48

I had both. Think tarka is right. they are 'dead' vaccines so you so you don't get symptoms. I didn't apart from a sore arm g from the wc one.

roweeena · 02/10/2013 21:54

Please have the whooping cough one, there is shed loads of whooping cough and newborn babies aren't fully covered until there second lot of imms at 12 weeks - this is just when they are at there most vulnerable. By you having the imms you will be protecting your child during those early weeks.

It is given as standard antenatally in other countries, such as the US. I'm a GP and I diagnosed 2 cases of whooping cough in adults last year - it is out there and babies died last year because of whooping cough.

It's a no brainer - have the jab

Smartiepants79 · 02/10/2013 21:59

I had both last year when I was having my DD. no side effects.
I think if you wan to minimise it just have the whooping cough one.

Thesebootsweremadeforwalking · 02/10/2013 22:03

I had them. I don't recall any reaction to the WC jab, but (as I always do) I felt a bit grotty for a few days after the flu jab.

I have had both flu and whooping cough, and I'd rather not have either again.

HaroldLloyd · 02/10/2013 22:10

I had both with no problems whatsoever.

Norfolknway · 02/10/2013 22:12

I'm 35 weeks and I had mine a few weeks ago.
No symptoms apart from a sore arm for a few days.

LittleRobots · 02/10/2013 22:13

I didn't have the vaccine (I had my first child pre-vaccine) and my baby of 8 weeks had whooping cough. Honestly if you'd seen her you'd have the vaccine. I breastfed and all the hippy stuff and I don't understand how some people think that's "enough". Checking she was breathing every 20minutes after a coughing fit, 2 AnE admissions, one ambulance, many many times of panicking as she was a bit blue. It lasts 3 months.

I still count my lucky stars she survived.

HorryIsUpduffed · 02/10/2013 22:13

Had whooping cough, which also comes with tetanus, polio and diphtheria boosters. I was grateful for them all (they are inert by the way) and although my arm was agony for several days afterwards it was definitely worth it.

A friend's newborn had whooping cough and was in hospital for over a week. That was enough to persuade me.

Hyperhelpmum · 02/10/2013 22:14

Thank you. Will defo book whooping cough as have two DC so they could bring it home.

I'm in NI. My MW told me yesterday that there have been 2 recent cases of pregnant women with Swine Flu who had to deliver early & were v ill. Had my flu today after that....will be having WC as soon s i'm eligible.

plentyofsoap · 02/10/2013 22:59

Its not worth the risk. I have had both and had no side effects at all.

suntodayplease · 02/10/2013 23:17

I've had the WC one, boy did my arm ache after fur a couple if days! Hoping to get the flu one, although in due next week so I may just miss out. Don't fancy having the flu and looking after a newborn though. My mw said last year a few women from my clinic caught the flu and ended up in intensive care, not something I want to risk.

katebakes · 02/10/2013 23:26

I'm pro vaccine but was in the same mindset as you. In the end I asked friends and read up on it. The tipping point was my mum recalling that my uncle got whooping cough as a baby. He was incredibly unwell and nearly died. I know it's emotive and may not apply but I decided to have it for the reason that I wanted to protect the baby as much as possible.

I had the vaccine, felt woozy and then vomited a few times. I then spent the afternoon sleeping and had a sore arm for a few days. It wasn't really that bad at all. Baby was still active afterwards which reassured me.

DS2inthebox · 04/10/2013 07:27

I've changed my mind now. I saw the othr thread and still decided against it. Now I'll get both.. it's not worth putting my baby at risk!
