Resting laptop on my bump

I do this a lot. I work from home, and yes I know I should sit at a desk like normal people, but I don't. I lie down a lot, and find the bump a convenient resting place for my laptop.

I'm not overly paranoid, and my partner is anything but, he hates anything woo or superstitious. But he tells me I shouldn't do this, that it's emitting microwaves, and him being a techie (a cynical one at that) I tend to believe him.

What are your opinions? Anyone else do this? Or is he just being an silly old worrywort?

i guess if your laptop gets quite hot it's not a good idea, although not sure that it would emit enough microwaves to be a concern. But I'm no expert! I've seen these recommended on here before: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00882KSE0/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=computers but I've not tried one myself. This might do the job if you're concerned. (They do other colours and I have also seen them on ebay).

I also wonder about this because I rest my ipad on my tummy all the time :)
Most reliable sources seem to say there's no proven risk from using computers all day for work, however I assume the cases studied would have had their computers on a desk.
Wish I knew, my googling has turned up nothing - lots of paranoia but nothing solid.

I think it depends how far into your pregnancy you are. It's recommended that from about 16 weeks you shouldn't lie on your back (although this does seem really early), so personally I wouldn't want to be lying down with an additional weight on top....but then I can't stand any kind of pressure on my tummy anyway!

Julietee · 03/10/2013 09:06

I think lying on your back while propped up with cushions is ok?
Besides which, the 'no lying on your back' thing isn't infallibly proven. The dizziness and discomfort only affects a small number of women.

Makqueen2 · 03/10/2013 10:09

I am lying here now with my laptop on my tummy, I do it all the time, even when not pregnant. It's a small macbook air though so it doesn't get hot.

This thread has reminded me about the no laying on back thing. I am only 13 weeks, but in my first pregnancy it drove me mad.

I was gagging to lay on my back. Then, after my section when I could only lay on my back for four weeks after as it was too painful to lay on my side, I was gagging to lay on my side again.

I was worrying about this as I recently realised I've spent most of my pregnancy working from home with a laptop by my bump, and loads of time on my ipad and phone - thought I was being silly thinking about it but then I mentioned it to my mum (who's more sensible than me!) and even she said having electronic devices against the bump all the time might not be great and there's no way of knowing. I'm 32 weeks so a bit late in the day but I'm now trying to lay off ipad time to be on the safe side!

Ooh I hope I didn't add to anyone's worry. It's hard enough as it is.
Thanks for the link Jammiecat. I showed it to himself and he says he's going to buy one, I'm certainly not paying for it anyway!
I really do think he's being a worrybag though. He's making me fresh smoothies every day too, to make sure I get all my vits! It's nice an' all but he is super cautious. Nonetheless, I'm sat here with a big cushion between me and the laptop as a temporary barrier, under his orders.

cream i started a thread asking the same thing about 6 or 7 weeks ago.

We came to the conclusion that A Cushion would be a barrier against all harmful rays too (AND that we should inform NASA, so they can use them in their space programe) Wink

creamcarpet · 04/10/2013 13:18

Aah I missed that thread (relatively new here).
I'm reassured the general consensus is that a cushion will suffice. If I tell OH though, I may find the microwave and other household appliances have been covered in them!

cream I think it's cute he makes smoothies! I'm the cautious one in my relationship always worrying about these things while DH tells me to relax Grin

I'm going to use the cushion radiation barrier method, soon to be approved by NASA.

Tulipsandbuttercups · 04/10/2013 14:56

I always use a lap tray with my ipad on very comfortable x

perfectstorm · 04/10/2013 21:57

I do this all the time - did with DS, too - and DH always gets anxious and puts a pillow or duvet in between. Which causes instant guilt. Blush

midwifeandmum · 04/10/2013 21:59

I dont advise it. Use a pillow or cushion to protect ur bump from the heat of laptop xx

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 04/10/2013 22:15

Isn't the time when you can put your bump to good use one of the bonuses of having a huge bump? I use mine as a place to rest my cuppa on or my kindle and browse MN whilst playing music to my unborn baby!
