Growth Scan

pucca · 27/06/2006 18:09

I am having a growth scan tomorrow, because fundus height has measured 3 weeks bigger, and 3D scan picked up excess fluid and when she did measurements it turned out the baby measured 4 weeks bigger.

So.... What will they measure tomorrow? and will they be able to give me a estimate of likely weight when born? will they say what baby weighs now?

Basically has anyone had one? and what was said? and what was the outcome?

TIA

Bump

I had one at 41+3. They measured the head, the abdomen and the femur length. They gave an estimated weight which was fairly inaccurate

How many weeks are you? Are you sure of your dates?

sugarfree · 27/06/2006 18:42

Pucca, they've really got you in a tizzy over this baby's size haven't they?
I really hope you get some answers and peace of mind tomorrow.

pucca · 27/06/2006 19:35

SF... I know, you would think this is all i have to worry about

TheBlonde...I am 32 weeks, my EDD by LMP was 12th Aug, they changed it to 20th Aug.

hi i had 4 growth scans in total as they kept thinking that due to me having high blood pressure it was going to effect my babys weight
he was eventually born 7lbs 12ozs good luck.

yackertyyack · 27/06/2006 20:57

Hiya love,
I am having growth scans every 2 weeks as baby is small - for me they measure the head, belly, femur length and calculate a current estimated weight - they then plot tham on a 'centile' chart to see whether they are within the normal range. My baby is off the bottom of the chart and at 3 weeks left is currently 5lb so a bit of a tiddler but still they are happy and I am sure that they will be the same with you except you may be at the other end of the scale!! If there is anything you are not happy about just ask to speak to one of the drs thy are usually really happy to help. Good luck xx

sugarfree · 27/06/2006 22:27

Nah,course I don't,I do blow rasberries at the screen though!!

You will come and tell us what they sayt tomorrow won't you?

eidsvold · 28/06/2006 05:24

i had them for both dds - dd1 was monitored for growth - heart defect picked up in utero - good thing as my placenta had started packing it in and she was born by c-section 10 days early (just 6lb).

dd2 - monitoring growth as I wanted a VBAC - sonographer measured everything and then said at birth dd2 would be around the 9lb mark. She was born 9lb 7oz 10 days late. That scan was done at 36 weeks.

Hi,

I am due to have a groth scan on Friday as they think my baby might be big too.
From what I am told they can be pretty inaccurate anyway, up to 1lb out...
Let us know how you get on, I will check back in after mine too.
It is mainly a precaution, isn't it? At least they are being thorough.

Good luck

Laura032004 · 28/06/2006 06:08

I had one with DS as due to me having pre-eclampsia they were worried about my placental function and him possibly not growing well.

They measured (as others have said) femur length, head circ and abdomen circ. They estimated him as already weighing 9lb at 38w, and he wasn't born until 42w - at 7lb 13.5oz. The femur length and head circ had thrown their measurements out as his head was (and still is) on the 99.8 percentile, and his legs were long (but his dad is 6ft 4).

I'd take anything with a pinch of salt, but it will be hard not to let the results worry you, particularly if they say it's a big baby and you want a vaginal delivery?

LeahE · 28/06/2006 07:21

I had one at 35.5 weeks because I was consistently measuring 5 weeks ahead. They measured the standard things and estimated that right then DS was around 8lb 3oz to 8lb 6oz. If they don't mention a birth weight you can (very roughly) add on around 0.5 lb per week remaining. I think the accuracy figures are that 80-90% of scans will give a birth weight prediction within 10% of the actual weight -- so not necessarily something to rely on too heavily. In our case DS was 10lb 5.5oz so it was a fairly good indication.

While I did end up with a emergency c/s with DS, it's perfectly possible for big babies to be born vaginally with no problems -- in fact several women I know have said bigger babies are easier to birth. My DS never engaged but if yours does then there's a good chance you'll have no trouble.

Forgot to add, the weight doesn't really worry me as such because i am having a elective section anyway, because i had a 3rd degree tear with my dd (she was almost 9lb).

OP posts:
Piffle · 28/06/2006 20:19

FWIW I had several scans (weekly)with dd as they thought I had cholestasis
they were very keen to induce
I got my own info disputing their diagnosis (I did not have it)
They then told me at 35 wk scan that dd would weigh in over 11 lbs based on ehr measurements and would I prefer a section?
I laughed and said nope.
At 37 wks 4 days they said she was over 10lbs and I could have her that day
I alughed again and refused
dd was orn at 38 weeks
weight
7lbs 8oz
I advise extreme caution with ante natal weight predictions, they seem to weight heavy IMO

sugarfree · 29/06/2006 07:39

Are you feeling a bit calmer now mate?

pucca · 29/06/2006 07:49

SF...lol, yes i am fine, thanks for asking and remembering x

I am going to laugh so hard when you come on here with your bith announcement and sheepishly tell us about your 8lber!

coppertop · 29/06/2006 10:27

I had growth scans with ds2 and dd. Ds2 was predicted to be around 7.5-8lbs at 38wks so I was induced to avoid ds2's being stuck like his older brother's did. Ds2 weighed 9lbs exactly.

Dd was predicted to be on the 98th centile, with a large head and abdomen. I had an induction a couple of days before my due date. Dd weighed 8lbs 4oz, was very slim, and also had a smallish head.

Kelly1978 · 29/06/2006 10:37

lol @ sugarfree - prob spot on!

I had to have regular growth scans - it routine with twins. They looked like heading for a couple of 9 pounders, but they were 6lb and 6lb7 by the time they were born. I think the estimated weight is no better than a guess really, but it is useful for checking progress.

pucca · 29/06/2006 10:54

SF....pmsl you prob right!

Growth scans are only as hgood as the sonographer who did them - in good hands they will detect 90% of babies who are small for dates but clinical measurement of the bump is only 30-50%. For more information on growth scans see Wellbeing Scans

I had these with DS2.

Oh, he's going to be small.

Oh, he's not growing right, his abdomen is measuring too small.

He's going to be little.

He's 6lbs (at 38 weeks).

Born at 40+4, chubby 8lb 1oz.
