Don't need a full bladder for first scan?

I've got my 13 week scan tonight, and apparently these days you no longer need a full bladder before the scan. Fancy that! Is this right? My DD was born in 2008 and everything seems to have changed since then.

So I won't be peeing myself on the bus tonight!

I didn't for the routine scans in 2004, or 2009 or again in 2011 or 2013. The only time I've been asked to have a full bladder (in about 5,000,000,000 scans - cervix complications) was for a placenta scan at 16 weeks with this pregnancy. Maybe it depends where you are/ varies from hospital to hospital?

Having just read the full thread Blush both hospitals are London teaching hospitals, so probably super-whizzy latest-thing-from-the-sonography-catalogue equipment...

Oh wow, what a response, thank you everyone. Well, I slurped a couple of plastic cups if water down once I got there but I didn't need a full bladder. I'm still thinking fancy that though.

I was at Kings, which is one of those whizzy London teaching hospitals, so I guess it is because of the super duper technology and all the research money they're able to raise isn't it? When you consider that most of our mums didn't have the reassurance a scan can give you, I feel bloody lucky to have access to this kind of ante-natal care.

I was about to say go with a full bladder but I see you've got sorted lol. I got shouted at (actually shouted!) by the sonographer at the 20 week scan because my bladder wasn't full enough. And she wrote it on my notes too - cow

For my my children I was told to have a full bladder , only to be told to go and half empty it when I went in for the scan ! Pregnancy and half a wee do not mix well !

beela · 02/10/2013 12:41

My 12 week scan is on Friday and tbh my bladder appears to be full pretty much all the time at the moment, whether I want it to be or not. Certainly during the night, anyway (apologies if tmi).

When I had my dating scan for DS 3 years ago I was desperate for a wee at the end and the sonographer seemed surprised when I asked her where the nearest toilet was Hmm

HumphreyCobbler · 02/10/2013 12:49

I find the whole full bladder thing unbearable really. Can't concentrate on anything else.

valiumredhead · 02/10/2013 12:51

God job I'm not pregnant, not sure I could do it these daysGrin

I was told to go away an drink more because baby was at the bottom of my uterus and they wanted my bladder fuller to lift him/her up for a better view. They do bloods after our 12week scan anyway so good to be well hydrated (not fun when it takes three attempts).

katebakes · 03/10/2013 07:52

This sounds really obvious but wasn't to me or the doctor apparently. When they give you a guide amount to drink, remember it is relative to your size.. I'm quite small so when asked to drink 250ml of water beforehand it turned out to be way too much!

missmargot · 03/10/2013 08:15

I was told I needed a full bladder for my 12 week scan but then had to go and empty it a little bit twice as it was too full.

blondebaby111 · 03/10/2013 10:40

When I had my 12 week scan I had a full bladder but halfway thru I had to empty as baby was being a stubborn little munchin and wouldn't change position. Perhaps just drink a bit but not so your really uncomftable but there's nothing worse xx
