I'm twenty weeks and all day I've had horrible cramping pains in my groin on both sides. Is this normal? It's my first so feel I'm constantly worried. Have the scan on Thursday so it will be good to know everything's ok.

Hi pinkbell, i don't have an answer but i'll be interested to se what others say as i have the exact same thing which started yesterday. I'm nearly 20 weeks. It feels like i've pulled my groin and it hurts when i go up the stairs or sit down on the toilet! Also felt some pain last night when i got out of bed for the loo in the middle of the night. Hopefully someone who knows will come along in a minute!x

Sounds like SPD/PGP, I'm afraid.

I had it badly with DS. Am currently 18 weeks and getting twinges, which is making me nervous! It could just be the normal ligament softening of the pelvic joints now the relaxin (hormone that does what it says on the tin!) is kicking in, but I'd see your GP to be assessed, and maybe ask for a physio referral. They can do a lot to help if you get to them early enough.

Meanwhile, try to keep things even, avoid stairs, and be aware of your "safe separation distance" between the knees, thighs and pelvis.

Oh - I had a totally normal (and almost painless, with just gas and air) labour of an almost 9lb baby. So don't worry that PGP will make that worse - my physio told me it can even help, as the pelvis will be so relaxed the baby won't get stuck as can happen if the baby is large and the pelvis small/rigid. Some relaxation of the joints is necessary, after all that's what the relaxin is there to do.
