Sick with blood

Am a bit apprehensive about starting this thread as not sure I it will make me more worried, but I haven't found any other posts with this in...

I'm 10 and a bit weeks pregnant and have had sickness since pretty much the beginning though worsened at 8-9weeks. Feel sick all day but am only actually sick about 3 times a day (plus some dry heaving) sorry if this is TMI!

Last night just before bed I had quite a long sick episode (anyone else definitely sick everytime they brush their teeth?!) an at the end of it I was just puking spit with some blood in. Not a massive amount but in my tired ad wretched state it was enough to make me cry hysterically. My husband looked (bless) and he said it was probably part of my throat lining and hadn't I ever had that before? As if it was totally normal... But I haven't... And... Is it?

What did the blood look like? Bright red?

I have had some nasty morning sickness and my sick sometimes has bright red blood in it too. It can be just strain on your throat from being sick so many times though if it is something you are really worried about please see a doctor. My doctor was lovely when I went in having a bit of a panic.

bebopanddoowop · 24/09/2013 11:05

Yes bright red and only a bit, so yes it could well be that. If I saw the doctor about everything I was worried about I would never leave so trying to gage if I need to. Have the scan in a week and a half so if that's ok I may stop worrying Smile

Ask your midwife just in case.

This happened to me too. Even though it looked dreadful I just knew nothing was wrong and I think it was caused by the strain of excessive sickness. It only happened once but I was still worried :)

bebopanddoowop · 24/09/2013 12:00

Glad to know I'm not the only one this has happened to so is probably fine. Not sure how much is too much to contact my midwife, I sent her a text last week as I have had bleeding which she said is ok as long as not accompanied with cramps. Don't want to keep bothering her or be boy who cried wolf!

Thanks both of you for your replies.

If there is ever a lot of blood, dark blood, or blood that looks like coffee granules then get right to the doctor/a&e (sometimes its recommended to take a sample if you do throw up in a bowl etc. It may be worth monitoring it as in keeping records of when and how much blood if it is a persistent thing but I do think it may just be strain. I threw up before going in to my scan and the nurse didn't bat an eye at the blood streaks in my vomit and again confirmed that when anyone throws up a lot it puts strain on the body.

Hope the sickness gets better soon! I my morning sickness was pretty much gone at 13 weeks.

I had this worry as when I'm sick at the end there will be pinky/red spit with blood in it. I figured as long as I wasn't seeing blood coming up in the sick (i.e. coming from my stomach) it was probably just the strain on my throat. I don't know about other people but I find I cough a lot after being sick. I also looked it up on NHS direct and it said most bleeding relating to coughing or being sick is usually harmless. If your really worried though I'd give your midwife a quick ring or pop into the gp.

The joys of being pregnant huh! I'm 13+3 and no signs of this sickness letting up just yet, I'd just love to feel well again!

K8eee · 24/09/2013 17:50

Yeah I'd assume it's to do with the vessels in your mouth popping with the straining Confused I'm just over 24 weeks pg and been sick a few times a week, which has caused my face to look like dh has beaten me up Hmm all the tiny blood vessels around the outside of my face, chin and neck have been bursting with the straining.

Oh and I too am sick 9/10 when I brush my teeth but I've now learnt to cope with it strangely enough. Just don't eat or drink before being sick then it's normally just stomach acid you throw up rather then your breakfast/dinner.

Congratulations by the way! Thanks

14 weeks not 24! I wish Grin

Kitkatz · 24/09/2013 18:00

This sounds like a Mallory-Weiss tear (look it up on wiki). Your GP won't do much but may give you an anti sickness medication to prevent the vomiting. It's actually very common but can look scary. If it keeps happening I would seek some advice from your GP not your midwife.

polkadotsrock · 24/09/2013 18:58

Happened to me too, just throat lacerations from continually chucking. Not pleasant but not worth worrying over either

bebopanddoowop · 25/09/2013 09:56

K8eee i was feeling dreadful for you for still being so sick at 24 weeks, 14 is a bit more like it. Still seems forever though doesn't it?

I haven't had blood since so think it was what everyone said about straining throat - I will keep an eye on if it worsens like that thanks pantomime.

I might make an appt at docs to discuss anti sickness meds though as even keeping liquids down is a bit of a struggle now - and I am self employed and falling massively behind with work. I hadn't even known they were an option 'til I saw it on MN. Anyone any experience with any?

Definitely make yourself an appt at drs if you are struggling with fluid :( I hope you get better soon. It does seem like it goes on forever. What I don't get is how a couple of days ago I was eating like no tomorrow; yesterday and today I feel hungry, make myself something to eat and struggle to even look at it let alone eat it Hmm

Kitkatz · 25/09/2013 15:30

There's several you can have, all absolutely safe in pregnancy!

Rowboat · 25/09/2013 22:42

Another thought, since you had just brushed your teeth could it have been bleeding gums? I get bad bleeding gums in pregnancy and have been know to see blood in vomit and panic then work out it was just my gums.
Oh and yes apparently an aversion to toothpaste is a common pregnancy thing.
