Sore mouth and tongue in third trimester. What could it be?

I don't even know if this is pregnancy related or something else. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and for the past week my mouth has got more and more sore. It's not red or discoloured but it feels like my tongue and inside cheeks have been scalded.

I haven't eaten anything different and feel fine in every other way.

I'm phoning the doctor tomorrow morning but has anyone experienced this in pregnancy?

Thrush?? That can make your mouth very sore,

Fakebook · 24/09/2013 00:31

I thought that at first, but it's not discoloured. I thought thrush leaves a white colour in the mouth? It just feels like my mouth is burnt

Perhaps get your blood sugars checked? I am diabetic and if my blood sugars are high my tongue in particular can feel almost scalded, just a thought.

Fakebook · 24/09/2013 01:24

Thanks irishe. Does the scalded feeling last for a week or more when you get it because of your blood sugars?

Could be thrush (it's not uncommon to not have the white plaques) but have your bloods been checked recently? Anaemia (rather b vit or even iron def) can cause similar sympt.

Hope the GP is helpful.

The most common cause of mouth issues my doctor told me is iron deficiency...I had this exact thing you describe pre pregnancy. I was treated by the dentist for an allergy, then by a doc for thrush and finally the other doctor tested my iron levels and B12 levels. Turned out I can't absorb vit B12 but u might have a deficiency which can be pregnancy related and come hand with low iron (or one...or the other). Ask to get ur bloods checked tho.

Thanks for the replies. I had my bloods taken about 3 weeks ago, and no one has phoned me about the results. It could be iron deficiency as I've been feeling weaker and out of breath but nothing too drastic. I might go and buy Vit b12 and start taking supplements just in case.

My doctor is phoning me back later this afternoon and hopefully I'll find out what it is then or get some treatment.

I had this, if I ate anything it was like I had burnt my tongue.

I was iron deficient and they put me on Pregaday and it sorted it.

irishe · 27/09/2013 23:04

Sorry for late reply, the burnt tongue sensation lasts until I get my blood sugars sorted out, think its a type of thrush, so no particular time period. I hope you get some answers from the blood results, it makes eating rather unpleasant!

Sorry I'd forgotten about this thread. I went to the doctor on Thursday and she couldn't fathom what was wrong but agreed my taste buds looked very prominent. She's prescribed me something called nystan as a treatment for thrush and has left a message for my midwife to take extra bloods to test my B12 and something else in Monday.

The suspension is making a small amount of difference tbh, maybe I do have a weird form of thrush or something? But I'll find out more after my blood results.

I suffered from the sore tongue after DC3 and as described by lilstar was finally diagnosed with pernicious anaemia (B12 deficiency). It can make you really tired, I would sit own and fall asleep as soon as I got home.

Sadie204 · 28/09/2013 20:43

I had this with DD2 and was also found to be deficient in vit B12. Only after I had been back and forth to docs about my iron levels/sore mouth/tiredness and ended up being hospitalised at 37wks before someone thought to check! Levels were so low, I needed 3 injections in the following week to bring it up incase I went into labour. Glad they've listened to you earlier, hopefully they get you sorted out

I am experiencing the same symptoms now.. it's been a week of having a very sore mouth... especially opening the jaw wide. Headaches follow after eating and one side of my mouth hurts more than the other.. Doctor said it wasn't thrush. Maybe I should try a dentist?
