antinatal care after previous placental abruption?

I am almost 31 weeks pg with my 2nd dc. My dd was born at term+5 by emcs due to pacental abruption, she weighed 5lb13...small for a late baby.

As its getting further along in my pregnancy, I am gettig increasingly anxious that the same thing might happen again as I've read that once its happened in a previous pregnancy there is higher risk of it happening again. I had a private scan at 27 weeks and for femur length and head circumference my baby is close to 5th percentile. I'm aware now that low birth weight can be a sign of failing placenta, and taking into account these facts its helping me get more anxious. I was never offered any reason as to why it happened last time.

I just wonder if there is anyone else who had this.in previous pregnancy and if so were you more closely monitored or given extra growth scans as a result in any future pregnancies?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Have you seen a consultant throughout? Have you had other growth scans?

I'm in the same (rare!) position as you, almost identical in fact. Placental abruption at 38+5 and DD was 5lb14oz (although it seems it's the way she is, tall an slim) born via emcs.

I'm now 14wks and have had an initial consultant appt, he mentioned he'll draw a plan for growth scans at 28 and 34 weeks. I don't feel it's enough so plan to insist on more.

Have you raised concerns over IUGR? There is a potential link between the placenta not working as it should and a late abruption.

Thank you both so much for your replies.

Stevie77, I was referred for consultant care at booking as far as I'm aware because of a thyroid issue I have. So far I have only had one extra appointment to see the consultant at 21 weeks. I told her about my previous delivery and at this point I asked to have an elective section this time because of it...which she agreed to and has put in my notes for at 39 weeks. The only extra scan I have been offered is at 32 weeks (a week on Friday) to check where my placenta is in prep for the CS and I will have another consultant appointment the same day.

I haven't raised concerns as yet about IUGR because it's only since arranging a private scan at 27 weeks and plotting the measurements on the graph in my notes myself recently from that scan and my 21 week NHS one that I have started worrying about it more. Do you think I should get in touch now or wait until my appointment a week on Friday?

LunaticFringe I'm so sorry for the loss of your dd and reassured to hear that you have went on to have a healthy baby since. There were no signs of my placental abruption and it was only when I was eventually asked to come in (6cm dilated) that my dd was monitored and in distress that it was picked up. She does have mild cerebral palsy, a weakness of her right side as a result, but I am so lucky to have her and realised when I posted this thread that I may hear from people with such devastating experiences as yours. Now I am thinking should my CS be booked in for earlier tan the 39 weeks...especially if they are not intending on monitoring me more closely in these last weeks.

Having seen both of your replies I am disappointed that my healthcare team have not been more on the ball with my care from what you have both said. I am getting more and more distressed about it...which also can't be good in my situation.

You should have been classed as high risk because of the abruption, and be monitored more closely especially since your DD been affected by it (I'm sorry to hear that). I think it is worth ringing up your midwife to discuss this and to definitely bring it up at your next constant appt - be assertive! If it helps, the consultant mentioned the CS would take place at 39 weeks.

Lunatic, sorry to hear about your loss.
