Hi all,

I know this is mumsnet but I hope you don't mind an expectant dad posting here. I had the exciting news the other day that my wife is pregnant. I've been reading her pregnancy book, which has been useful but I know there are loads aimed at dads as well. The problem is that I'm struggling to find which are the better ones. Do any of you know any that your partners have found particularly useful? Many thanks in advance.

My hubby has been reading 'The new dad's survival guide' by Scott MacTavish and finds it both hilarious and informative (without being too preachy etc).

There is also a great bit for dads in 'what to expect when you're expecting', but its only a chapter long! It's a fab book anyway, and we have been reading it together as its all done month-month and week-week so we both know what's happening and when!

congratulations to you and your partner Grin just learn to say 'yes' a lot Wink

I would just continue to read normal pregnancy books.

I was having a look for a 'dad specific' one for my DP and they are all a bit patronising and irrelevant imo. One I picked up in Tesco was really focused on how you should no that your aren't going to find your DW very attractive throughout her pregnancy, how she will become a hormonal lunatic etc etc.

I'd be interested to hear if anybody has found any good 'uns though.

I bought 'show dad how' by Shawn bean (lol) which is by parenting magazine. Not sure if you can get it in the UK though.

It's probably not what you'd be looking for as it's not that in depth and mostly done in pictures but I'd advise getting it for any other half that has the attention span of a gnat, like mine. It's pretty funny and informative.

I thought the "Commando Dad" book looked great, a bit tongue in cheek but it gets the message over humorously.

bludgerwitch · 22/09/2013 16:43

Hmmm, I downloaded my DH "Pregnancy for Men: The whole 9 months" - the sample on amazon looked good, jokey conversational style and not too patronising!

The Bloke's Guide to Pregnancy by Jon Smith is really good. Made me laugh a lot and definitely helped DH. Also see Bloke's Guide to Babies.

For non patronising and useful info around childbirth my DH has found the birth partner good, although it's got a US emphasis.

Wow! What a friendly and helpful bunch you are. I'll check out those suggestions and go from there. Thank you all so much.

Seconded for Commando Dad! DH has used it to buy most of the baby stuff, didn't need me at all so I just put my feet up! Grin

Quodlibet · 22/09/2013 19:28

My other half read the New Dad's Survival Guide and thought it was patronising and quite sexist - loads of mentions about how to pretend to look interested in something/have knowledge about something with the underlying message that it's really mainly the woman's job to care about/sort out this stuff. Seeing as you are being proactive enough to post on MN for advice I reckon you might be up for more than that.
He's just read 'What to expect' and prefers having the detail.

Another vote for "Pregnancy for men: the whole nine months" by Mark Woods. We both enjoyed reading it.

Yonionekanobe · 22/09/2013 20:17

Mark Woods' books are super - I find both more informative than my pregnancy/baby & toddler books!

Jellypudmum · 22/09/2013 20:21

They do a Haynes manual for dads!!

Dusty04 · 22/09/2013 20:44

Echo the thoughts on the mark woods book, DH laughs out loud often and found it really informative :)
