i am 9+2

i was prescribed it a week ago for morning sickness but am very reluctant to take it as scared of it damaging the foetus, as googled it and apparently its not suitable for pregnant women :S

i know that there is hardly anything that is classed as 100% "safe" for pregnant women as obvs they cant test on pg women

but even so i am nervous of taking it. but i am so bad today i just cant take it anymore :(

so was wondering if anyone has ever tried it and did it work? and was all ok with your pg?

Hi! Buccastem (stemitil) is extremely safe and has been prescribed for many years in pregnancy without any adverse effects noted. I've been prescribed it myself in pregnancy but found the under-the-top-lip administration and the bitterness of the tablet made me gag - not really what you want with HG Hmm. So, I switched to cyclizine which has been a life saver in my past pregnancies and this current one. Good luck - if the buccastem doesn't work for you go back to GP and see what else is available. DO NOT worry about safety issues though - they really aren't an issue and one extra thing you don't need to be worrying about!

I tried 5 different meds and stemitil (same a buccastem but takes longer to work) was suggested by a obstetrician and I haven't looked back. Am 26 weeks and scans seem to suggest all is fine. I threw up for 19 weeks until i started on it, occasionally i still take now I'm evenings to try and eat in the evenings.

Take it and see if it helps, I had to take a month off before the meds kicked in and I could function again. Good luck, it's terrible xx

Hi I've been prescribed cyclizine and it has made me feel a lot better. I'm still sick but it has made me keep fluid and food down. I still feel nauseous but it has massively cut it back, I still have bad days but at least I'm getting a few good ones too.

I like you felt worried about taking tablets not for pregnancy BUT I felt it was more damage to the baby not keeping and fluid down I couldn't keep any thing in my stomach were as now all the water I drink stays down. Feeling better just for that.

Only prob the tablets make me really drowsy but better than throwing up all the time. That in itself made me feel more exhausted hope you feel better soon xxx

It didn't work for me! They taste revolting too :S

Prochlorperazine (Buccastem/stemetil) has a good safety profile in pregancy and is very widely used. I did a lot of research before I took it and was reassured from my reading that it was fine in 1st and 2nd trimester, bit more reluctant to take it in 3rd as it can cause some mild withdrawal if its in a babies' system at the point of delivery.

Buccastem can taste a bit nasty but is good if you are throwing up so much u can't keep pills down. Stemetil is nicer if u Can keep it down.

Phrochlorpeazine has a completely different action than the other big group of drugs used to treat morning sickness which are old fashioned anti histamines like cyclizine or phenergan.

So if one doesn't help it's worth trying the other one.

I was given this at the beginning of my hyperemesis and it did nothing to help, I wouldn't worry about damage to the baby, if there were serious risks they wouldn't be allowed to give it to us preggers. They do taste absolutely revolting and actually made me gag, I was eventually given cyclizine which was much better!

I was presecribed prochlorperazine after severe morning sickness suddenly descended at 17 weeks (day after I felt LO move for the first time) and I was left unable to eat or drink anything. They were a godsend as I couldn't keep anything down, even tablets, so being able to just pop one under my gum and let is dissolve was brilliant, even if it wasn't the nicest tasting thing. At least once I'd taken it I could actually eat or drink something to get rid of the flavour! I did a bit of research online before I started taking it, and it seems that what I was presecribed is widely used in pregnangy, and there are no concerns about the effect. I think the same drug in a larger dose (and different form) it advises to consult your GP before taking if pregnant.
