Hi everyone,
This is my first ever post and as the title suggests I could do with some advice. I found out on Thursday that I am pregnant (about 5 wks) and this came as a complete shock as I am not only taking the pill but also have been told for about 10 years that this was unlikely to ever happen naturally for me. I alternate between being excited and completely terrified.
I currently seem to have diarrhoea (sorry) in the mornings with nausea which I am hoping is normal.
Any advice from anyone telling me what to expect and any important things to know would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance xx

Congratulations!!
I am a first timer so felt very lost right at the start and was unsure if everything was normal or not.
I had loose bowels at the start and to be honest would prefer that to constipation which is what most women seem to get. If it continues though its worth getting checked out.
First thing i did was call my gps and they registered me with my midwife and i went for an initial appointment to get some leaflets etc. Each nhs trust seems to difer tho so if you call your gp they should be able to tell you what to do next.
Start taking folic acid (this is important as it helps prevent spine problems over the first 12 weeks) If you want you can take a pregnancy vitamin that will have folic acid requirements along with others in but if your diet is good then you should get most vits from your food so its up to you, just make sure you take folic acid.
You will have a booking app with your midwife between 8-11 ish weeks. She will test your pee (get used to peeing in a cup) and get lots of background info about you and the father and take some blood and also go through what happens when.
Then you should get a scan at 12 weeks (the midwife will tell you how this works. I booked mine myself but others get a letter with the date and time)
Once you have registered with your midewife then you should get a phone number to call if you have any worries, such as cramps or bleeding. Not all cramps and bleeding mean bad news. I had both and am now 24 weeks. Everything will feel really unatural and strange as your uterus and bones start to move ready for baby, but its all good in the end.
Am sure some more experienced ladies will be along shortly.......

Xx

Thank you so much, it is so nice to have someone let me know what I should be doing as when you google stuff there are so many conflicting things you end up more baffled than when you went on!
Glad to hear that the stomach stuff is normal, if not a little anti-social! So not looking forward to my daily commute to London next week, think I may just stay in the loo the whole way lol.
I called the dr and they just basically said lovely.......see you on 22nd October!

Google is very scary so try to avoid at all costs!
If you have any concerns at all just call your gps who should be able to give you a number, call your local early pregnancy unit (google to find the number) or if you have lots of bleeding go to a&e.
Congrats again!

Congratulations!
Also a first-timer, also felt completely clueless to begin with (actually, still do - now 16 weeks...). Oh, and also had diarrhoea at start and on and off now which confused me as everyone seems to talk about constipation.
Don't be surprised if your GP seems completely uninterested, just makes a few notes and sends you on your way to the midwife for the booking-in appointment.
In the meantime, I found the NHS Choices page on what not to eat really clear and helpful - here it is, www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/917.aspx
Don't venture into the wilds of google, you'll terrify yourself!
These Mumsnet pregnancy talkboards are, however, brilliant. Every anxiety and worry I had/have seems to be addressed on a thread somewhere.
Oh, and expect to get some (minor) stomach pains, apparently they are stretching pains - I was worried to begin with but was reassured that they are normal. Also, needing to pee more frequently (especially during the night) which I had always assumed only happens when you have a big bump pressing down on your bladder but apparently happens in the first trimester too.
Congrats again!

Congrats to you too! Am going to have a good explore on this site and try and find out as much as I can!! Plus anything that might help my OH get used to the idea - he is currently freaking out.
Xxx
