And we found out that our baby only has one Artery and vein in the umbilical cord instead of two arteries. I never knew this was a thing of an issue.

I feel numb, we need to go back at 34 weeks for another scan to check growth. The sonographer was lovely but I am really upset and worried.

Does anyone have any experience of this or info???? I am worried to use the dreaded Google too much as I worry about what I may find!

Thanks

I'm So Sorry to hear this x. Did the sonographer explain much?

Bumpiemalumpie · 20/09/2013 21:59

Hi, only that I should not worry, that the remaining artery had grown bigger to compensate and that it is common, so common that in a few years she thinks it won't even be something they look for!!

No helpful really though

Hi Hun
Really sorry to hear you're upset with the 20 wk scan. I just looked of Google (so you dont have to!) and it said this is the most common problem with umbilical cords and vast majority if babies are born at term and healthy. There are always exceptions of course but from what I read they'd have already likely found anything else that may have been wrong at the 20 wk scan and if all else looks fine they will just offer a growth scan, which sounds like what you've been offered.
I know you will worry regardless because we all do but I hope this has helped even a little bit.
Sam x

Thank you Sam. I feel a little better about it today after 10 hours sleep!!!

I wonder if anyone has had this experience on MN?

Hi Bumpie

One of my friends from my NCT antenatal class had a baby with this. She was monitored closely throughout pregnancy with extra scans to check growth (sounds like what has been said to you?) and I seem to remember she had some monitoring during the birth (the probe under the scalp thing - nothing to worry about at all).

She was warned to expect a 'small baby', but she was about 7lb when she emerged bang on schedule. The baby is now a lovely, enthusiastic 2 year old who gives my DS a run for his money! No problems at all!

Hope that helps! I'm sure it's stressful now, but I believe it is really common, and my friend (and her little one) have had no problems - all is well. Good luck, and enjoy the extra peeks at your LO xx

Sorry to hear that you are going through this, it's not something I have any experience of but with both of mine I had potential problems highlighted at the 20 week scan which turned out to be fine. With DS they suspected a heart abnormality and worries about growth, with DD an under developed placenta, too much fluid and concerns over growth.

Both were absolutely fine and are now 4 and 2.

It is difficult not to worry but the sonographer's comments sound very reassuring.

Thank you Zoo, it is comforting to know there are others out there. I am trying to be more positive and just looking forward to the extra scan!!

I am pleased you are now at 27 weeks and all is well. Did your midwife talk to you about it at all??

x

Hi
I had never heard of this before I was pregnant with DD now 5. Apparently it's more common than we realise! You should have regular scans and feel like you're always at the hospital! But don't worry.
Enjoy your pregnancy :)

The private scan was worth every penny of the £250 :( so expensive! Probably will go again for reasurrance though xxxx

Bumpiemalumpie · 22/09/2013 17:40

katebakes are you in the same boat??

As I am being offered another on the NHS, I will sit and wait.

Hello my twin boy has SUA. Most PGs go on to have healthy full term babies. Try not to panic, if they were concerned they'd scan you more. It's not as scary as the internet makes you believe.

I have a complicated high risk PG because of it but that doesn't mean you will. My twin boy has severe IUGR (20w scan confirmed) and oligohydramnios (confirmed at 9w scan) which they now believe is caused by the SUA.

grape999 · 22/09/2013 21:43

My just turned 7 year old had this. We had extra scans for growth, but she was a healthy 8lb 7oz, and 9 days late, and was, and still is, completely normal! We coudln't take her home until she had wee'd as they were keen to see her kidneys work. She wee'd after a few hours, so all fine. I had completely forgotten about it to be honest until I saw your post.

Thank you all, grape was your pregnancy considered as HIgh Risk? I have just realised I cannot have my baby at home or at our Domino Birthing centre :(

No, not as far as I know. At my 12 week scan, I found out that I was in fact 16/17 weeks pregnant. I'd had a light last period I thought, but obviously was in fact pregnant with a small bleed at 4 weeks. I then had the 20 week scan when they said about the cord thing. Then I think I had perhaps 3 extra growth scans, all very relaxed and straight forward. I liked the reassurance to be honest - cord issue or not.

I had her in a normal maternity ward, but that is what I planned. No one told me that I HAD to be in hospital. That said, it was all incredibly quick and I nearly had her in the car park. My husband was determined that we had to get a pay & display parking ticket before we went in....

Bumpiemalumpie · 24/09/2013 19:35

Hahah, I love the fact he wanted to get the ticket first, my DH would so be like that as well, he would probably have a worry about how long we may be!!!

I think I will be reassured when I see the Midwife in October, I am excited about the extra scan to be honest when I am not worrying. We were given a leaflet about baby movements at the same time, standard procedure apparently, I am now loving looking for the patterns!!

Thank you for your advice and reassurance
