Is this a pinched nerve?

Have had back pain all week that comes and goes in intensity. I have also had a weird pain that runs down the middle finger of my right hand almost constantly and my right hip area is painful as well.

Any opinions?

sciatica?
I had it quite badly towards the end of my first pregnancy and it just used to sudenly twinge and I'd have to do a few deep breaths, then it would go away.

This will last for quite a while and then ease off a bit. Unfortunately, it comes back!

have you had a word with the midwife? She might be able to suggest something. Mine was just there until I had DS1

I called yesterday and got told "Go to the ER" Like I wanted to spend hours and hours not to mention hundreds if not thousands of dollars for that (I am in the US)

Dh and I are thinking of changing doctors after this.

oh - sorry
God bless the NHS.......

How many weeks are you? Mine was only right at the end.

jabberwocky · 24/06/2006 11:30

That's what has me so concerned - I'm only 15 weeks! I got really depressed thinking that this pregnancy is going from bad to worse very quickly

  • not sure I'm the best person to help then - hopefully someone more useful will come along soon.
Good luck

Thanks for chatting anyway. At least I don't feel totally ignored

I had this before I was pregnant (for many years) - it was some sort of hernia in the spine (basically pinched nerves). I tried everything, the only things that helped at all were going to an osteopath, which gave temporary relief (but did not sort it out in the long term) and doing lots and lots (and I mean lots) of really gentle pilates. Since I got pregnant I am forcing myself to do twenty minutes of stretching and twenty of gentle pilates every day and I've managed to stave it off (it runs in the family, and one of my sisters always gets it really badly when pregnant).

Sorry, it's not a quick fix but it does work.

jabberwocky · 24/06/2006 15:46

Thanks for that. I had been looking at a pregnancy pilates dvd that is supposed to be very gentle. Will get it ordered ASAP.

I hope it helps. Just make sure to take it really easy, even if it's frustrating and you feel you're not really doing anything, because otherwise you could risk injuring yourself further.

Good luck!

It's a bit scary thinking about how one wrong move can bring that pain back. I was very careful yesterday and am cautiously optimistic today. I did get the pilates dvd ordered too.

Thanks again!

Believe me, I know what you mean, but it's not permanent. Basically, the way I understood it (I'm not a doctor, just from my experience) was that you have to build up the muscles that support your spine/joint where the nerve is getting pinched (and all the others because otherwise you are likely to create a problem somewhere else). Once you're there, though, you are much less likely to get injured. I say this as someone who did no exercise until I was almost 30, and was getting injured all the time. Haven't had an injury now in over 5 years (touch wood!).

Really hope you get better quickly. You have all my sympathy. And well done for tackling it early! (wish I had done that)
