I am 37 weeks and am packing my bag....... I have been told that this baby is going to be small (near 6lb if I am lucky) Question is..... I have got quite a few small baby size outfits but would you pack any newborn sizes just in case they are wrong and its big????

Personally I would... always better to be safe then sorry. Unless you live nearby and can get your dp to pick them up for you.

AAAHHH congratulations btw and good luck with the birth...

I would, I was told that my ds was going to be 'a whopper', at least 9 1/2 lbs according to 37 week scan so I took newborn and 0 - 3 months sleepsuits and vests. In the end he was only 8 lbs 8 oz so the newborn ones were fine but it makes sense to cover all eventualities.

Have you packed cheap (paper) LARGE pants. Don't take nice ones for afterwards - the bleeding is unbelievable and if by any chance you have to have a c-section you need pants that come up to your waist so they don't rub on your scar.
Also, paper pants are quite small so buy a size larger than you are!!

Moomin · 23/06/2006 16:04

would agree about pants but prefer proper ones, not those vile paper ones made out of tea-bag material. buy a bumper pack of cheapo big black pants and then you can always throw them away after

HumphreysCorner · 23/06/2006 16:17

BHS-3 pairs of huge pants for £5-can't go wrong! Have stocked up again.

and don't forget pads (breast and nether areas) and nappies. I did. no, the NHS don't have any to give you....

and don't forget moisturiser, your skin looses a lot of moisture.

yackertyyack · 23/06/2006 16:28

....believe it or not this is my second but the first arrived early and dh had to pack my bag after i had delivered!! Bless him he tried but new white towel and sexy knickers was not what i really wanted! Will def get the knickers to throw away as you suggest but not sure if i can wear paper knickers!!!

ah then you'll be an expert. DH brought me a special white silk dressing gown after ds was born. I had to dye it black when I got home, just vile....

yackertyyack · 23/06/2006 17:42

definately no expert as I had no bag at all last time and had to rely on DH shopping!!!

ASDA cheap knickers - 3 pairs for £1 - can't beat them!

ilovecaboose · 23/06/2006 18:24

Remember to take some food and drink for those who are coming with you. I was in labour for just over 21 hours and hated it when OH had to go and grab something to eat!

Also if you're planning to breastfeed I'd get some nipple cream incase you get sore (i used lanosil) And nighties that open at the front.

sarahlou1uk · 24/06/2006 11:40

Don't forget some nice shower gel for afterwards and some flash wipes to clean the bath before you get in!!!!!

pol26 · 24/06/2006 14:19

I would take little things with you and maybe one larger sleepsuit. Just point DH in direction of other sleepsuits etc at home incase you want anything else brought in.
I would take food, drinks, moisturizer, baby wipes (for you)face when sweaty and giving birth and bits and bobs when bubba here) take a good bok- incase you're in a while...
I agree with the cheap black pants thing- I got some from matalan last time and this time, those disposable ones are hideous. You sound all rustly!

EmmaKB · 24/06/2006 15:30

I was told that my fist baby would be small but infact she was 8lb 10oz. I would definitely take some newborn size clothes with you. Even if you do have a small baby it doesn't tend to matter too much if the clothes are too big while you are in hospital.

DD was 7.2 and I was told she'd be bigger about 9ibs!! I bought some bits in Next for newborn 7.5Ib. They lasted a good month or so. Maybe throw a few extra bigger clothes in just in case.
I always advise to bring flip flops in case you have a shower in your room and not a bath. I hate the thoughts of standing bare foot in a hospital shower even if it's clean....
Some chocies in case you get hungry during the night after ba ba is born.
Oh Yackertyyack good luck, it'll all be great.

MaryP0p1 · 24/06/2006 16:42

I wouldn't worry too much if you've fogotten something or if its the wrong size, I'm sure there will be plenty of eager people happy to pop to the shops for you when its all over.

Oh and by the way they told me both times my babies would be small (both 9lbs). Appearently its very difficult to tell.

Top tip, food for afterwards in your bag. I tell you this because the food is godawful and after mine I wanted greasy fast food and quick. In fact my DH was sent out to McD ASAP. My mother brought me sandwiches and I will forever be grateful to her for that. She was definately a woman who had remembered childbirth. Maybe organise someone like you mother or his to bring you something nice to eat. I met a woman in hospital whose DP brought her her tea from home every night, what a sweetheart hey?

Pagan · 24/06/2006 16:42

One of those face spray things was the best thing I had in my bag

PinkTulips · 24/06/2006 17:13

would stick with the newborn size to be honest, doesn't matter if they're a little big, if your hospital is as hot as mine was you won't be putting him in outfits, just a babygro for the most part. any time i put more clothing than that on dd the nurse came over tut-tuting that she was far to hot and striped her! save the outfits for at home.

dont'forget to bring tonnes of pads, i only had one packet and ran out when dd was 1 day old, had to stumble across to chemist and buy always as they didn't have maternity pads. not good, was changing the always every ten minutes, they just can't cope.

also if your planning to breastfeed bring nipple cream (lansinoh is fantastic), poor dp had to go to boots and get me some when dd was a few days old

not a bad idea to bring food to eat for after too, the meal they were serving when i got to the maternity ward turned my stomach, all i wanted was biscuits and crisps!

MaryP0p1 · 24/06/2006 17:19

Don't know if anyone has given you any advice on breastfeeding but if you decided to

when you finish feedin, use a lttle of the milk to wipe around you own nipple, it acts as an anticeptic and healer, and help prevent sore nipples.

madness · 24/06/2006 17:30

Tip for myself, pack some extra stuff, clothes etc and leave it at home for dh to bring in just in case I need to stay in longer as planned (like with dd and ds and dh brought me silk underwear etc....)

yackertyyack · 25/06/2006 09:42

Thanks guys.....hadn't thought to pack hardly any of that stuff so I am off shopping again today!!!!
