Just wondered if anyone else will or has given birth here? Chances are we'll be moving before baby is born but I may still stick with the heath (if possible) as all my care will have been there.

I had all 3 of mine there. Last one since the new bit opened.

First two were on cons unit and then on to the ward. Cant fault the midwives. As much support as I needed/asked for etc.

3rd was born on the cons unit again but in the pool. I then went down to the mw led unit. I had a big room to myself as it was so quiet.

Mws were fab, spent ages sitting with me while I tried to get feeding going.

If you are close enough I would recommend the Caerphilly Birth Centre, I had a fantastic experience there. I also know plenty of people who went to the Heath with no problems though.

Sluggers · 15/09/2013 20:37

The Health midwife unit is great. It's all brand new - en-suite rooms, each with a birthing pool, partners can stay overnight even after the baby is born. "Better than The Holiday Inn" and "when can I check in?" were two of my friends comments!

The consultant unit is upstairs so if you do need to switch then it's all in one place.

I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I gave birth in the Heath end of last year - the newly done out women's unit. I was in MLU (Midwife led) for the birth but was consultant led up to 34 weeks and can't fault it in either section. Very reassuring to know that you can switch upstairs to cons led if anything goes wrong. I had a straightforward water birth, lovely midwife (with wonderfully petite hands !)

peanut86 · 15/09/2013 22:26

Aw no, I'm probably going to be in the consultant unit although won't know for sure until 28 weeks Hmm I want the en-suite rooms! Wink

I gave birth at the heath 3 months ago and it was a bit of a tricky one (moved from midwife care to cons) and I can honestly say the care was fantastic. It was super busy the 4 days i was there (pre and post birth) but the midwives were all amazing and the consultants and anaethatists were really good - kept me in the loop at all times and although it didn't go to 'plan' exactly it was as calm as it could be. Ended up on the ward after rather than a private room which was quite noisy but lots of support from the midwives.

dottypyjamas · 15/09/2013 23:34

Oh and congrats on your pg!

peanut86 · 16/09/2013 09:48

Thank you dotty, I hope both you and baby have recovered well :)

I will be going there for my 1st in December, hopefully to the MLU if there are no complications. You also have the children's hospital for wales and the womans unit on hand, so reasuring to know that you are close to a lot of expert care if needed. Good luck!

SadPander · 16/09/2013 16:53

Applepiesky I'm due 22nd December, how about you?

Applepiesky · 16/09/2013 16:58

Ah brill I'm due 19th! Although I'm convinced mine will come Xmas day ;-)

peanut86 · 16/09/2013 17:33

Thanks everyone, we're looking at buying a house up the valleys (joy Wink), is there a reason they wouldn't let me continue on at the heath? Will literally be moving a month or so before due date. Obviously if time allows it on the big day Wink

Apparently, Midwives tomorrow night (9pm BBC2?) is filmed at The Heath & is mainly about the consultant unit. Might be worth checking out OP?

peanut86 · 16/09/2013 19:45

Ohh thanks, I'll watch it, I keep meaning to anyway and forgetting about it Smile

Oh yes I have visions of the baby deciding to arrive while I'm trying to enjoy my Christmas dinner! Peanut I think you may still be able to choose where you want to give birth. I know people in Cardiff who have chosen Llandough, and when I had my booking in and scan they asked me if I was planning to give birth at UHW - so it seemed as though I had a choice. Where abouts are you moving to? I've heard some good things about the MLU at YYF in Ystrad Mynach (was Caerphilly Miners) if you're going to be anywhere near there?

peanut86 · 16/09/2013 21:11

Sadpander - not quite sure yet I'm afraid, waiting for mortgage to come through then the big hunt is on, all very rushed! Probably around Abercynon/Quakers Yard area although have also been looking at Caerphilly. Basically anywhere with easy road links to Cardiff!

SeriousStuff · 17/09/2013 01:30

Yes - giving birth there in 3.5 weeks (hopefully!). Have heard good things, especially around the MW-led unit where, as Sluggers said, you get a private room, birthing pool in every room and DH/DP is allowed to sleep there overnight.

OwlBeThereForYou · 17/09/2013 11:18

Sorry to hijack the thread a little, but how easy is it to choose your hospital? I think I'd be sent to the royal glam but really want to go to the Heath! I'm in very early pg and haven't been able to get a dr appointment yet, but it's been playing on my mind. Tia!

And congratulations to all of you!

SadPander · 17/09/2013 13:53

We looked in Ystrad at Cwm Calon and it was very nice, might be worth a look as good road access to Cardiff and a direct train ( we were also due to be moving but shitty buyer pulled out today - but that is another thread!) Good luck with the mortgage and hope you get the Hospital you want too.
