Hi everyone new to this but just need some reassuring...

Firstly before I have people being negative about my age I would like you to know I have been with my boyfriend since I was 13 and we both have full time jobs (maternity leave for me soon) and are probably more prepared than some people a lot older than 19. Sorry I have recently had some negativity from people regarding me age.

I recently had my 24 week check up and the doctor said everything was okay but then she noticed in my notes I had 2 more growth scans booked and asked what these were for as there was no comments on then? My midwife has not mentioned anything regarding the baby's health or even mentioned I was having the growth scans I just thought it was normal until my dr mentioned it. I tried to call the hospital to ask but there database was down so I have to call back Monday but the worrying has kicked in now!!

Does it have anything to do with my age? I am 19 and also I know you sometimes have them to do with weight but I am a healthy Bmi?

I am starting to really worry now so if anyone has an idea to put my mind at ease please comment! Thanks xx

I only had two scans, but I know some people have more. If your midwife hasn't told you why you're having an 'extra' one, I'd give her a ring to check why and you can put your mind at rest then.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, but I know it's hard not to!

And don't worry about what people think, the best mum is one who loves her baby and looks after it, age isn't relevant IMHO Flowers

Do you have your notes from your previous scans, what do they say? Did your midwife measure your bump recently, it might be that it measured big/small and they just want to check. It won't be anything to worry about.

You say a doctor did your 24 week appt, are you under consultant care? What for? Cos that might be a clue.

congratulations on your pregnancy! you are and adult, so ignore dumb comments about your age.

I can only tell you my experience:
with first baby it is average to have 2 or 3 scans;

  • 12 week dating scan (between 11-13 weeks) to confirm pregnancy, number of babies and just a basic check and also to determin EDD
  • 20 weeks scan (tend to be 20-22 weeks) this is the "big" scan to check everything through
  • sometimes some problems are picked up at the 20-week scan, like placenta previa or some benign cysts that need checking again later around 30-34 weeks usually

some people need even more for a variety of reasons due to previous MCs or baby's being breech etc

I have no idea what the norm is in your area, but honestly you have nothing to worry about!
if you have diabetes, they might want to check baby's size (if too big a C-section might be advisable)
or if baby is slightly smaller they might want to do additional tests or just keep an eye on you both.

read here about growth scans in third trimester

please try not to worry, it could after all just be a clerical error!

any more questions, do ask!

The 24 week appt was just a gp appt. I had bump measured and it was all okay nothing mentioned there either? I think that I may just have to stop worrying and wait until the databases at the hosp are back up and running to find out! Thanks! X

No diabetes or anything? Are you a smoker? It might even be a mix up. I really wouldn't worry though, just look forward to seeing your baby again.

Loislulabell1 · 14/09/2013 21:35

Not a smoker, no diabetes so far but my mother became diabetic in her 7th month and the same as my boyfriends mum in her 6th month 2nd baby not sure if it works like that but may meen I am at risk?

google gestational diabetes.

if those details are on your notes, that could be why they want to check you - and it is nothing to worry about, but they need to keep an eye on baby's size.

Just wanted to say, I'm 18 and 29 weeks pregnant and have not had any negative comments about my age on MN. Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

Excited2meetmyprincess · 15/09/2013 01:14

I have had two extra growth scans and have another booked for 36 weeks because my uterus is measuring bigger than normal.
But to be honest I have just accepted them and wouldn't question as it means you get to see baby again and make sure all is ok rather than waiting from 20 weeks until she is born. I have felt a lot more reassured that all ok because I have been scanned more so know they would see anything that was wrong.
Congrats and try not to worry xxx
